A Wolves fan who entered one of the home sections at the Hawthorns and chanted ‘f*** off West Brom, go Wolves’ was mobbed and punched minutes later.

The man, who was joined by friends and posted the video on Snapchat, had to flee while being attacked by West Brom fans.

The FA Cup derby clash between West Brom and Wolves was suspended for more than 30 minutes on Sunday following ‘inexcusable’ violence in the crowd and six people have been arrested.

Wolves won 2-0 in a match marred by ugly scenes as fans stormed the pitch, ‘missiles’ were thrown and ‘distressed’ players carried their children out of the stands at The Hawthorns.

The incident with this particular fan escaping his assailants in the 80th minute is just one of many from a dark day for English football.

One man was even spat at by home fans as he was led away off the pitch with blood pouring from his head.

Baggies defender Kyle Bartley was pictured rushing into the stands to remove his daughter before being substituted to look after his family.

There was tension between supporters throughout the derby but it exploded soon after Cunha put Wolves 2-0 up in the 78th minute as West Brom supporters thought they had seen their rival fans celebrating in the home section.

This led to fans charging the area they believed Wolves fans occupied before police and stewards intervened.

A 16-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of carrying a weapon before the match, with police now reviewing body-camera footage in order to identify more supporters who were involved.

During the violence, the players appeared to put their rivalry aside as a West Brom fan has thanked two rival Wolves stars for checking on the wellbeing of his son.

Craig Dawson was booed during the match, having made the move to Wolves from West Ham after previously playing for the Baggies – but there were two home fans who held no grudges towards the defender after his classy gesture during the conflict.

Taking to X, Liam Dunn posted a picture with his son as he wrote: ‘Rivalry aside, despite getting trampled over and pushed out the way in our seats earlier amongst the madness, just wanna say thank you to Craig Dawson and [Matheus] Cunha for asking if he was okay and unhurt!’

‘I know fans shouldn’t go onto the pitch but it was the safest place to keep him at that moment.’

The Football Association has confirmed that it will launch an investigation as they branded the disorder – alleged to have been sparked by Wolves fans celebrating in the home end – as ‘completely unacceptable’.

‘Safety and security are of the upmost importance, and the behaviour of those involved was dangerous and inexcusable,’ an FA statement said.

‘We will be investigating these serious incidents alongside the clubs and the relevant authorities, and the appropriate action will be taken.’

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil and West Brom boss Carlos Corberan also condemned the ugly behaviour, which is likely to result in the home side being sanctioned by the FA.

The shocking scenes unfolded when fighting erupted after Matheus Cunha’s 78th-minute goal put Wolves 2-0 ahead.

Footage shared on social media shows unrest in the crowd as about 50 police officers with batons and stewards tried to hold back fans.

The match always had the potential for violence as it was the first time these rivals have played each other since 2021 and the first time in front of fans since 2012.

The clash had been designated high risk, with security increased and the kick-off scheduled for 11.45am in the hopes this would avoid tensions overflowing between the fans of the West Midlands clubs.

In the 78th minute of the game, as the Wolverhampton Wanderers had just upped their lead to 2-0, violence broke out in the corner of the West Stand and Birmingham Road End. It was part of the ground which theoretically should have been holding solely home supporters.

There was a lot of pushing and shoving on the ranks, with some fans spilling onto the pitch. Witnesses say the saw several bottles were thrown at people.

Apparently believing they had seen Wolves fans celebrating in the home section, Albion supporters in the Birmingham Road End charged towards that area.

About 30 police officers and a similar number of stewards rushed over to calm the situation – but despite four announcements for fans to leave the field, the game was not restarted as fans were reluctant to get off the pitch.

Play eventually resumed with a heavy security presence around the pitch. The game restarted in the 78th minute, with Wolves holding on to their 2-0 lead which booked them a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil told ITV after the win the outbreak of violence between fans was ‘really disappointing’.

‘Up until that point, it was a good tie with good atmosphere,’ he told ITV.

‘How people behave at football is really important and we need to look at that, make sure everyone is safe.’

He added: ‘I know the West Brom players’ families were in that area, which is a concern. I really hope that everyone is OK.

‘I’m not really sure what stoked it, but we got the fixture played without any more trouble happening.’

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan told ITV: ‘Of course we are disappointed with any type of incident like that.

‘Unfortunately, the game was interrupted by this incident and now, we are unable to talk about the atmosphere our fans created, we can’t talk about this aspect.

‘We are totally disappointed by this. Everything before the incident was unbelievable, between both clubs it was very special and incidents like that we need to avoid.’

The players of both teams left for the changing rooms and an announcement warned fans that the game could be abandoned if those on the pitch wouldn’t return to their seats.

When the game finally restarted, the players went through the motions as they played out the closing stages of the game, with the Wolves holding on for their first win at the ground since 1996.

There had been about 250 riot police deployed to the area and the atmosphere was tense.
