  • The new captain has led England to wins in their opening Six Nations games
  • Jamie George’s beloved mother Jane, 68, lost her battle with cancer last week

Jamie George has opened up about the personal turmoil of losing his mother, Jane, to lung cancer – revealing that she implored him to take on the England captaincy despite her medical plight.

The Saracens hooker, 33, explained after arriving in Edinburgh last night that he was offered the honour of leading his country on the same day that he received grim family news. ‘My mum has been suffering with cancer for six or seven weeks,’ said George.

‘I found out about her cancer diagnosis on the same day I found out I was going to be England captain; so that was a pretty mixed day.

We’ve been going through a lot as a family for a long period. The deterioration she had was really fast. I found out on Sunday about the fact that she was terminal, and she passed away on Wednesday last week. It’s been really tough.’

In the circumstances, George was uncertain about whether to take on the captaincy, but he was left in no doubt that it was dying mother’s wish.

Now, George will take on Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday hell-bent on honouring his mother with a fitting Six Nations performance and result, adding: ‘Of course, I’m going to use motivation, I want to win for her and I want to win in her memory.’
