Petrol and diesel drivers could slash their fuel use by a staggering 10 percent by pressing a simple button.

Experts have claimed the recirculation button will increase a car’s air con efficiency which could lead to dramatic savings.

The button can be easily identified as it features a white car with a looping arrow inside of it.

The feature is usually located on the dashboard, right next to the air conditioning controls.

Experts at LeaseCar admitted the tool would help boost aircon efficiency and in turn increase fuel efficiency.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Tim Alcock, spokesperson for LeaseCar.UK said: “This little-known button cuts out any outside air and recirculates the air from inside the vehicle back into the AC system to cool it down again.

“Use this button on hot days to increase the air con efficiency, get the vehicle cooler more quickly, and reduce your fuel consumption.

“Filtering out the external air is a good idea if there are any unpleasant smells from other cars or your surroundings, as well as reducing pollen from coming in if you suffer from hayfever.”

KwikFit expert Bradley Jando has admitted the recirculation button could save a significant amount of fuel. This is because the car’s compressor requires energy to run an air conditioning system.

This means a “small amount of fuel” will be burned every time the system is left running.

He said using aircon in the traditional way would use as much as 10 percent” with the effects “particularly noticeable” on shorter journeys.

Graham Conway, spokesperson for Select Car Leasing even warned the simple solution could also extend car battery lifespans.

He explained: “The air recirculation will assist the AC system which will reduce fuel consumption and also save power for the car’s battery to last longer.

“With all this in mind, pressing this mysterious button has some great benefits that are better for your car’s health and the health of everyone in the car.”

Alongside the practical tips, specialists also stressed using the recirculation button could also have health benefits.

YouTube channel, LearnCar01 remarked: “Many people have driven a car for more than 10 years and they don’t even know how to use the car’s internal and external cycle function.

“Turn on the air conditioner when there is a traffic jam. The internal circulation must be turned on to prevent the exhaust gas from outside the car from entering.”
