Bayern Munich dropped yet more points in the German title race on Friday night after Lucas Holer’s 87th-minute volley secured a 2-2 draw for hosts Freiburg.

The point means that Thomas Tuchel’s side are seven points adrift of league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who also have a game in hand over Bayern, adding to the frustration of the side, including Harry Kane, who had one of his six shots cleared off the line by mid-table Freiburg.

The visitors were playing in their 2000th Bundesliga game, but were not able to hold out for the win, after fighting back from going behind early in Freiburg’s better start.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a fine save to stop Roland Sallai’s header, then Sallai hit the crossbar with an overhead kick, before Christian Gunter struck the ball perfectly to send it inside the far post in the 12th minute.

Tel equalized in the 35th minute with a sweet strike inside the right post. The 18-year-old French forward, making a rare start because of Leroy Sane’s injury, flicked the ball inside and dispatched it past Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.

Bayern was better after the break, when Atubolu saved from Jamal Musiala, and Holer needed to clear Harry Kane’s header off the line, before Jamal Musiala’s 75th minute goal, which came after he weaved through three defenders and curled his shot inside the far post.

But forward Holer had the final say with a fine volley with his left boot, which went inside the far post, after the visitors failed to clear the ball.

It meant the 11-time champions failed to cut the gap to Bayer Leverkusen to five points, and Xabi Alonso’s side can move 10 points clear at the top with a win at Cologne in their derby on Sunday, with ten games remaining for each side.

Bayern next host Lazio on Tuesday for the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, needing to overcome a 1-0 loss from the first leg in Rome.
