Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped out in New York last night. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attend the 2021 Salute to Freedom Gala at Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum. Meghan dazzled in a red satin dress with her hair swept up into a chic bun, while Harry donned a black suit and bow tie for the occasion. Express.co.uk spoke to body language expert Judi James about the couple’s dynamic on the red carpet.

Speaking about the colour of Meghan’s dress, Judi said: “Red is a colour linked to powerful emotions that can range from anger to passion and love.

“It is a strong statement colour that is often seen as a signal of defiance and even resilience.

“Although it links with the poppy-red theme again here, Meghan’s choice of bright red tone and strong styling, with the huge train reminiscent of a wedding dress as it creates the kind of drama and space that A-list celebrities love for their red carpet appearances, has to link psychologically to the last high-drama red dress she wore when she was under huge emotional pressure as she and Harry were about to leave the UK for life in the US.”

In terms of the dynamic between Harry and Meghan, Judi added: “As she and Harry take to the red carpet here the overall body language narrative is more celebrity than royal, with Meghan clearly enjoying the attention and appearing to play to the cameras a little with her body movements and facial expression.

“Walking together there is an air of defiance in the way that the couple adopt a very similar stance with chests slightly puffed and rather forced-looking social smiles on their faces.

“Harry’s hand clasp is another classic celebrity gesture known as the tow-along, with his hand on top, pushing Meghan’s back a little as though adopting a protective role.

“Meghan performs a radiant-looking part smile/part laugh as she looks at her husband, with her upper teeth displayed and her eyes crinkled in an eye smile.

“Her right shoulder looks slightly hunched forward, which suggests a hint of flirting with him, too,” she continued.

As for the photographs of Meghan looking over her shoulder behind her, Judi commented: “Meghan’s backward glance is a Hollywood favourite on the red carpet and she couples this flirty, over-the-shoulder glance with a very knowing facial expression, using a sideways eye glance, a pursed lip smile and one raised eyebrow to suggest a sense of shared fun.”

As for what the Duchess was wearing, she had chosen a red satin gown by Venezuelan fashion designer Carolina Herrera.

At the front, the dress had two thin straps in a V shape at front and back with a plunging cleavage line.

The skirt flowed out from the waist, with a wedding-style train.

At the back of the waistband was a bow and the front of the skirt featured a high slit in the middle.
