Erik ten Hag needs to prove himself in three ‘defining games’ before the end of the season to remain as Manchester United manager, believes Gary Neville.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent stake in Manchester United has seen Ineos take control of football operations, with a number of changes planned off the pitch.

Neville is of the opinion that a decision on whether Ten Hag remains as manager will likely be defined by how he performs in the biggest games – starting with this afternoon’s Manchester derby.

‘Ten Hag’s got two [games] against Liverpool and one against City. I do think they’re defining games,’ Neville said on Sky Sports

‘The new owners will probably make their call after those games.’

Fellow pundit Roy Keane echoed the thoughts of his former Man United team-mate.

‘It’s a huge few months coming up for the manager,’ Keane said.

‘Ten Hag is trying to get that confidence from the new owners. They have dug in and got results.

‘United will have to be at their very best today. There’s huge pressure on the manager.’

More to follow.
