I’m A Celeb’s Nigel Farage admits he wants to take part in trials to get 25% of the airtime as show loses 2.2million viewers over his £1.5m signing

Date:

I’m A Celeb’s Nigel Farage has admitted he wants to take part in trials to receive 25% of the shows airtime.

During Tuesday’s episode, the former politician, 59, told food critic Grace Dent, 50, about his plan to reach a ‘new audience’.

He explained: ‘If you do the challenges, it’s 25% of the airtime. I’m looking at reaching a whole new audience.’

Nigel looked disappointed as he waved Nella off to take part in the No Time To Cry trial after she was voted by the public to do it.

Afterwards, Ant and Dec made a joke about Nigel’s comment, saying: ‘Shortly we’ll be going into camp to reveal who’ll be getting 25% of the airtime tomorrow.’

Fans were shocked by Nigel’s confession, with one penning on Twitter: ‘Nigel isn’t even pretending that he doesn’t have a game plan’

Another said: ‘We all just agreeing to not vote Nigel after him admitting he just wants airtime’

A third added: ‘Nigel jealous Nella gets 25% air time all to herself. Gotta admit defo like Nigel in the jungle’

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! has seen viewing figures plunge again as 1million viewers switched off on Monday.

Previously, the reality TV series launched with a peak audience of 7.8 million (average 7 million), down 2.2million from the show’s launch the year before.

Last night fans saw former UKIP and Brexit party leader Nigel Farage tuck into a gruesome four-penis pizza, camel udders and a cow teat in a bid to win meals for his campmates, alongside Nella Rose.

And despite audiences at home being left in hysterics as he pulled a series of hilarious grimaces , viewing figures dropped once again.

According to Overnights.TV the second episode of the series, only brought in an average of 6.1m viewers.

It comes as no surprise that Farage was selected to take on the first trial after it emerged he received a reported £1.5million to appear – the biggest I’m A Celeb pay cheque ever – which left fans fuming.

He explained: 'If you do the challenges, it's 25% of the airtime. I'm looking at reaching a whole new audience.'

Audiences have been vocal about boycotting the show over the controversial figure’s pay cheque.

Sunday night’s show launched with a peak audience of 7.8 million (average 7 million), down 2.2million from the show’s launch the year before.

In 2022, the I’m A Celebrity… launch got an audience of over 10 million people at its peak – up two million from the previous year.

That was despite former health secretary, Matt Hancock being paid £400k to join the line-up, donating 3% of that fee to charity.

During his stint, he admitted he was ‘looking for a bit of forgiveness’ as he received a grilling from his fellow castmates about his controversies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Matt, then 44, struggled to contain his emotions as he apologised to camp for having an affair with Gina Coladangelo, which saw him break his own guidance, lose his job and cause the collapse of his 15-year marriage to wife Martha.

Loose Women’s Charlene White, 42, had told the politician her aunt died from the virus and that she hadn’t been able to visit her in hospital due to the rules he had set in place – before disregarding them himself.

Last week, fans threatened to boycott the new ITV series over their ‘tone-deaf’ decision to let Farage enter the jungle.

The signing of the GB News star has proved controversial as Nigel is a famously divisive figure, who is known for his right-wing views on immigration and gender pay gaps.

Nearly 10,000 people have been using the hashtag ‘Boycott I’m A Celeb’.

Taking to X, social media users plead their case as to why they were taking action against the show.

One user wrote: ‘ITV notoriously choose the most heinous politicians. They secure these guests by promising to show ‘another side’ to them.

‘There are no other sides to sc**bags like Matt Hancock & Nigel Farage & attempts to rehabilitate them for the nation is propaganda. #BoycottImACeleb’.

‘Hancock was bad enough but I can’t even look at Farage. Do itv realise how many viewers they will lose with this decision? #BoycottImACeleb’, a second wrote.

A third user added: @ITV @antanddec @DecsMcpartlin I boycotted @imacelebrity when you put @MattHancock on your show. Now the odious @Nigel_Farage.

‘I’m livid that you give these people a voice, a platform and way to be seen. I can’t, I’m livid spitting feathers. #BoycottITV #Boycottimaceleb’.

A fourth expressed: ‘I wrote to @itv to complain about Farage going on #BoycottImACeleb . Have received a really pathetic, standard response from their team.

‘Please continue to email them. They need to understand quite how many people are totally p*ssed off with them.’

An ITV spokesperson told MailOnline about Sunday night;’s show: ‘I’m A Celebrity received ITV’s highest overnight audience of the year and the biggest entertainment launch across any channel.’

The launch comes after Farage shared a throwback clip of I’m A Celebrity hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly giving their opinion on the possibility of the politician joining the lineup.

There has been much criticism lobbied at ITV for choosing to cast him and several petitions have been launched to get him removed, with others boycotting the show in protest.

I’m A Celeb’s hosts Ant and Dec have not commented on the lineup so far, but Nigel took to his Twitter on Tuesday to share an unearthed video of the duo discussing him being on the show.

Last year, the Geordies often joined livestreams with fans after the shows aired, to chat about the events of the latest episode and answer questions from viewers.

The clip Nigel shared saw one person suggest the politician enters the jungle one year, with And and Dec seeming to give their approval.

The video shows Dec saying: ‘Dan says Nigel Farage,’ with Ant responding: “‘Dan that is a very very good idea. Very good idea.’

Dec chimes in to add: ‘I’d like to see that.’

Alongside the clip, Nigel wrote: ‘Give the people what they want!’ with a pair of eyes emoji.
