Sir Jim Ratcliffe has said that Manchester United’s CEO must get tough on their high earners, and ensure players only cash-in if they are successful, according to a new report.

Since his partial takeover of the club was confirmed this week, Ratcliffe has identified some places where they can tackle their high wage bill.

Man United have struggled to achieve their usual high expectations on the pitch, with last season’s Carabao Cup the only trophy of note that the club has won in recent years.

According to the Mirror, Ratcliffe has demanded that Manchester United’s Chief Operating Officer Omar Berrada must deal with this financial situation quickly, to ensure they return to days of success on the pitch.

Berrada has come in from arch-rivals Manchester City, with a brief to create a bonus-heavy blueprint like the one that has brought lots of trophies to the Etihad, including last season’s Treble, and the Club World Cup.

Man United’s latest figures showed they were spending £330m on wages, but there has been a lack of success on the pitch to back such high expenditure.

While Manchester City posted a wage bill of £400m in November, they have earned £300m in prize money from their three trophies last season, and have more coming their way for their involvement in the Club World Cup in 2025.

Berrada proved to be a good negotiator during his time at Manchester City, walking away from high-profile deals if they were not financially viable, and now he will be tasked to do the same thing at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Man United have repeatedly broken the bank – and offered huge salaries – to players who have not repaid that on the pitch, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.

Ratcliffe completed a £1.3bn deal to become a co-owner of Man United, with INEOS finally getting the green light for them to take a 27.7% stake in the club on Tuesday night.
