After hearing “The Voice” winner Michelle Brooks-Thompson sing the anthem, the fans decided to join in. It didn’t take long for everyone to join in, and the anthem resounded throughout the stadium. Ashley Stroehlein of WCNC in Charlotte, who was in the stands during the national anthem, captured the now-viral event.

Brooks-Thompson notified Stroehlein that she was unaware of the full depth of what had happened. She was aware that her microphone had been turned off, but she believed it had been restored.

She claimed that she believes the audience was singing along at the time because they were so enthralled by the show. “Get back to the dressing room, and the coordinator on the game field was thanking and encouraging me for handling it all so professionally,” Brooks-Thompson explained, “and I’m like, ‘It’s OK, you know, the microphone went out and it came back in, and I performed the rest of the song, and they listened to me!

“And he just looked at me and said, ‘No, they didn’t listen to you,” Brooks-Thompson continued.

Despite the technical difficulties, Brooks-Thompson said the experience was charming and precious to her. “Me just being a part of that moment, it was something that unified the people in the arena… even if it was only for a minute 30 seconds, we were all together as one,” she explained.

The amount of admirers that appeared to me at the end, some of whom were crying, and others who were simply overjoyed to be a part of this historic event. That means more to me than anything else because our country is in desperate need of unity and peace right now.”

Charlotte FC had sold around 73,500 tickets for Saturday’s game, and the team announced that they had broken the MLS attendance record with 74,479 supporters in attendance before the game began.

Charlotte FC announced earlier this week that it had sold enough tickets to break the MLS attendance record against the LA Galaxy on Saturday. Before Saturday, the record attendance for any Major League Soccer game was 72,584.
