New York Jets coach Tony Oden returned to practice on Thursday with his left arm in a sling after being hit during a player scuffle in their joint session with the Bucaneers.

Oden, the Jets’ senior defensive assistant/cornerbacks coach, was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after being caught in ‘friendly fire’ when a fight broke out in the joint practice with Tampa Bay in New Jersey.

Jets cornerback Brandin Echols was understood to be at the center of the fracas, with Bucs receiver Mike Evans later claiming that Wednesday’s session brought the most fights he’s ever seen in joint practice after a near-decade in the NFL.

As tempers flared, Oden was knocked to the ground before being carted off the field in Florham Park.

‘I think he caught some friendly fire. He’s awake, he’s doing fine, he’s stable,’ Jets coach Robert Saleh said. ‘He’s doing fine. I’m not exactly sure what happened. I know it was during one of the altercations.’

And less than 24 hours on from the ugly skirmish which forced him to hospital, Oden was seen taking Jets practice with his injured left arm supported in a sling.

The 50-year-old appeared in good spirits and in no way hindered by the injury as he shouted instructions to his defense ahead of their pre-season fixture against Tampa Bay at the weekend.

Oden has spent two decades in the NFL as an assistant coach, with his last four years spent alongside Saleh in San Francisco and now New York.

He worked for the Buccaneers a decade ago before stints in Miami, Detroit, and San Francisco with the 49ers.

Oden wasn’t the only person carted from the field on Wednesday. According to reports, Bucs wide receiver Russell Gage is now set to miss the rest of the season after being taken off with a knee injury.

The 27-year-old suffered a non-contact right knee injury during the session and Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said it appears ‘pretty serious.’

ESPN have since reported that he is set to miss the 2023 campaign.

Gage, who had 51 catches for 426 yards and a career-high five touchdowns last season in his first year with Tampa Bay, went down during early 7-on-7 drills and appeared to be in tears as he was carted off.

Several of his teammates gathered around Gage while he was being looked at on the field.

‘I can tell by the way that he was sitting on the truck that it was probably something that happened pretty bad,’ Bowles said. ‘Our hearts go out to him and we´ll see how it goes.’

Gage was expected to be Tampa Bay’s No. 3 wide receiver behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
