NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract – taking his total career earnings to a staggering $700million.

Goodell, who started off as an administrative intern at the NFL before working his way up to the job in just under two decades, has spent 17 years as commissioner after being chosen to succeed Paul Tagliabue back in 2006.

And on Wednesday it was confirmed that the 64-year-old will reach 20 years in the role after extending his reported $64m-a-year deal until March 2027.

An NFL statement reads: ‘The Compensation Committee updated the full ownership today that an agreement has been reached to extend Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract for three years, through March 2027.’

The new contract marks Goodell’s fourth extension as NFL commissioner, having also earned re-ups in 2009, 2012 and 2017. His previous deal was set to expire in 2024.

According to Front Office Sports, it also brings the American businessman’s total career earnings to the $700m mark.

Goodell’s most recent salary was said to be worth $64m, a figure which dwarfs that of NBA and MLB counterparts Adam Silver ($10m) and Rob Manfred ($17.5m).

Under his leadership, the NFL’s popularity and revenue have skyrocketed. The Washington Commanders were sold for a record $6.05billion earlier this year.

The Minnesota Vikings, the last team to sell before he took over, only sold for $600m in 2006 by comparison.

Goodell also has dealt with intense scrutiny and criticism regarding the league’s handling of off-field issues involving players, including domestic violence, and the initial response to Colin Kaepernick’s call for social justice by kneeling during the national anthem.

‘He’s done so much for the league with stability,’ Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said at the league’s spring meeting earlier this week.

‘It’s a tough job, but he’s been a hard worker and worked very hard for the NFL and its success.’
