• German broadcaster Deutsche Welle has reported Alexander Zverev’s court date
  • Zverev was previously subject to an investigation by ATP into other abuse claims
  • His ex-girlfriend claims he ‘choked her against a wall in row before proposing’

Tennis star Alexander Zverev will reportedly stand trial in May on allegations of physical abuse from his ex-girlfriend.

German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) has reported that a spokesperson for the Berlin criminal court has detailed that a hearing will commence from May 2024.

Zverev, who has continued to deny all allegations levelled against him, is at the centre of abuse claims from his ex-girlfriend, Brenda Patea.

Patea has alleged that the former world No 2 ‘choked her during an argument’ and was a ‘jealous man’.

Back in November, Zverev received an order from a Berlin court to pay a fine close to £400,000 for physically abusing Brenda Patea, the mother of their child, and ‘damaging her health’ during an argument in May 2020.  He denied all charges and objected to the fine, which has triggered a trial.

A statement by his representatives, Schertz Bergmann, called the penalty order fine ‘scandalous’, and hinted that the player would take action ‘using all means possible’.

Patea is thought to have dated Zverev for less than 12 months between 2019 and the birth of their daughter Mayla in 2021.

The German model described a ‘mixture of shame, fear of Zverev’s lawyers, and concern for her child’ as playing a role in why she delayed requesting the court order, but speaking to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Ms Patea said that her decision to speak out has stemmed from a bid to set an example for victims of assault.

Ms Patea claims that during the confrontation, Zverev ‘pushed (her) against the wall and choked her during an argument in the hallway’.

This led to ‘pain in the throat and neck area, and difficulty swallowing’, which she discussed when confiding in two friends after the incident.

It is important to note that Süddeutsche Zeitung were forced to take the article with Patea down.

A law firm acting on Zverev’s behalf described the initial story as beyond ‘the limits of permissible suspicious reporting.’

Zverev has kept tight-lipped for the most part on the allegations but described the court penalty order placed on him last November as ‘complete bulls***’, before adding: ‘Anybody that has semi-standard IQ levels knows what this is all about.’

Curiously, the French Open in Paris is due to start on May 26 and so at this stage it remains unclear how any trial would impact Zverev’s commitments on the ATP Tour.

The player was the subject of a 15-month investigation by the ATP which concluded in January 2023 with the verdict that there was ‘insufficient evidence to substantiate published allegations of abuse’.

‘This determination may however be re-evaluated should new evidence come to light, or should any legal proceedings reveal violations of ATP rules,’ their statement added.

‘Zverev has consistently denied all allegations and supported ATP’s investigation.’
