With many people not having the time or urge to iron, they often turn to using a tumble dryer or air-drying clothes. However, sometimes clothes can come out of a washing machine really badly creased. Fortunately, with the help of laundry experts at home appliance brand Repair Aid, households can prevent this from happening by avoiding a few washing machine mistakes, so that they can keep ironing time to a minimum.

1. Not loading the washing machine properly

The experts claimed that household should “never overload washing machines as it can reduce the effectiveness of the wash”.

Overloading the washing machine will result in having to repeat a cycle, and waste energy and water.

Instead make sure to check the capacity limits of the washing machine before putting a load on. The right capacity is mentioned in the manufacturer’s guide.

Many people don’t realise that washing machines have different capacities for different materials, so it is “essential to check the manual” for what is being washed.

For example, if a washing machine has a 6kg capacity, this will apply to cotton. However, for wool or delicate items, the load capacity may reduce to just 2kg.

The experts added: “As overloading can cause excess creases, it is important to check the weight of your load carefully.”

2. Too hot temperature

Washing your garments at a temperature which is too high “can cause creasing”, warned the laundry pros.

Households need to make sure to check the temperature recommended on the labels of their clothes to clean them at the correct temperature.

This not only helps to prevent items of clothing creasing but also “shrinkage” too.

3. Hot water rinse

Most washing machines will be connected to the cold water supply in the home as they are cold-fill only.

However, the experts explained that sometimes “people make a mistake” due to incorrect labelling or getting the hot and cold water valve the wrong way around.

They said: “If hot water goes into the rinse cycle in your washing machine, then it can increase the creases.”

4. Wrong spin speed

If the appliance is not spinning clothes at the correct speed can also cause creasing in clothes.

It should never be assumed that every item requires the same spin speed. For example, denim requires a spin cycle of 900 rpm while cotton spins best at 1,400 rpm.

Again, it is worthwhile checking the guidelines from the manufacturer to know for sure what is right for the machine.

5. Leaving laundry in the washing machine too long

Ideally, it would help if households took clothes out of the washing machine as soon as it finishes its cycle.

Some sophisticated washing machines may even keep clothes in water and conduct the final spin when they are ready to be retrieved, which can help if the washing is put on before going to work or bed.

However, if the machine doesn’t do that, the experts said: “Leaving items damp in the drum will usually cause excessive creasing.”

6. Not enough water in the washing machine

If households still notice excessive creasing after following the five tips above, then it may be a result of a problem with the washing machine.

The experts said: “If the washing machine does not have enough water during each rinse, then it can cause excessive creasing.”
