Zach Wilson has ‘a lot of confidence’ in himself to lead the Jets in the wake of Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury, he told reporters Thursday.

Just four plays into Rodgers’ Jets career, Wilson was thrust back into the starting role after the former Packers star tore his Achilles tendon vs. the Bills on Monday night.

And despite struggling in 22 NFL starts to date, the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft feels good about his third season as the Jets’ starter.

‘I truly believe in myself and I think that’s the first step to being in the NFL,’ he said via SNY. ‘You have to believe in yourself first and the rest will take care of itself.’

Asked if he needs to regain the confidence of his teammates after being benched last season, Wilson pushed back.

“I don’t think I need to think of it like that. I think how I can go out there and play football will earn that trust back from those guys.

‘I would say I have a very good relationship with everyone in this locker room. We joke around, we eat lunch together, we go out for O-line-QB dinners, and so I would always feel like the guys in this locker room have my back just like I have their back.’

Regardless of Wilson’s optimism, Rodgers is understandably devastated to miss the entire season with his new team.

Wilson revealed that there had been a ‘little bit of texting’ between the pair after his injury vs. the Bills.

‘I’ve been trying to give him his space, he’s obviously going through it,’ Wilson said. ‘But really just showing him I love him and that we miss him being around.

While Rodgers works to return from his injury, Wilson will hope to settle in as the Jets starter – a process that he won’t be rushing. He finished the Jets’ win over the Bills with 140 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.

‘One step at a time, one play at a time. And I think it’s trusting the guys around me. I think they’ve showed this past week how explosive, how dynamic guys are,’ he said.

‘Relying on this good defense that we have – I think it’s going out there, taking it, like I said, one play at a time, trusting in my footwork, trusting in what the coach has been talking about and we’ll go from there.’
