• Emma Raducanu suddenly became unwell in the deciding set on Thursday
  • She revealed that she threw up after losing to her Chinese opponent
  • Raducanu denied that her illness may have been caused by nerves

Emma Raducanu has revealed she vomited following her second-round loss at the Australian Open after suddenly becoming unwell in the deciding set of her clash with China’s Wang Yafan.

Raducanu dropped the opening set 6-4 before responding to take the second, but needed her blood pressure checked in the closing stages of the match after retching on multiple occasions and complaining of breathing difficulties.

The 21-year-old still forced her opponent to serve out the match, but was unable to force a late break as she lost the final set 6-4.

Explaining what had happened in her post-match press conference, Raducanu told reporters that she did everything possible to prevent herself being sick on court, but eventually had to let it all out after the match.

‘Now I feel a little bit better, I’ve had some time. During the match, third set I was 3-0 up serving and all of a sudden just felt so sick, just really weak and nauseous,’ Raducanu said.

‘So, throughout the third set I think everyone could see it was a bit of a battle. Physically body-wise I felt fine, it was more… I was throwing up in my mouth. But then after the match it came out.

‘But now I’m OK, I’ll get over it, it just sucks with the timing.’

Fellow Brit Jack Draper was also sick into a bin just moments after winning an epic five-set win earlier this week, and later admitted that the nerves and anxiety he experienced in the tightly-fought contest could have played a part in causing him to feel unwell.

Raducanu was asked whether this may have also affected her in just her third match back since undergoing surgery on both wrists last year.

The 2021 US Open champion denied this was the case, insisting she had coped well mentally during the match and always believed that she could come from behind to win.

Responding to whether nerves could have caused her sickness, Raducanu replied: ‘No way because I won the second set, I was actually feeling good about my tennis.

‘I felt physically good, mentally, I don’t know why, I just felt really composed the entire time. Even in the first set when I was making a ton of errors with the wind, I kind of always had this feeling that I was coming back, and just tidy up the errors.’

Raducanu’s exit from the first grand slam of 2024 capped off a disappointing day for Brits after Draper and Katie Boulter also lost their second round matches.

Cameron Norrie is the only British singles player left after he overcame rain delays and an injury scare to recover from two sets down and beat Italy’s Giulio Zeppieri.
