Lucy Bronze will miss England’s final warm-up game for Euro 2022 after ‘feeling unwell’ on arrival in Switzerland.

The defender has tested negative for Covid-19 but will continue to be monitored by medical staff. She will travel back to the UK today as a precautionary measure.

It comes as a blow to manager Sarina Wiegman, who will now be sweating on the fitness of the right back ahead of the Lionesses’ opening game against Austria next week.

Bronze scored and played 90 minutes in England’s 5-1 win over the Netherlands last week. Chelsea’s Jess Carter or Rachel Daly could fill in for the Barcelona defender against the Swiss tomorrow.

There was some welcome news for Wiegman, however, with star striker Ellen White returning to the squad after recovering from Covid-19.

White was sent home last week after testing positive last Wednesday and missed the game with the Netherlands on Friday. But the striker was able to re-join her team-mates for training this morning.

Last weekend was the final chance for players to mix with families and friends, with the FA looking to limit the spread of Covid ahead of the tournament.

Cases are on the rise, with Spain reporting five positive tests this week. England defender Alex Greenwood also tested positive at the start of this month.

The FA are working within UEFA’s protocols for the tournament and follow UK Government advice.

Wiegman has held open training sessions at St George’s Park and last week 285 players from the grassroots game were invited to meet the squad. All 23 players then took part in a media day.

Visitors to St George’s Park have been required to take a lateral flow test and this will continue as the team move into their new base at the Lensbury Resort in London.
