Apple’s all-new iMac and iPad Pro are now available to pre-order, but those desperate to get their hands on these latest and greatest gadgets are facing disappointing news. Heading to Apple’s website reveals some models won’t now be available for a few more months – with one version of the rebooted iMac not shipping to customers until July 15, 2021. The latest iPad Pro is also in short supply with the improved 12.9-inch tablet now shipping to customers from late June.

There’s no word on what is causing these delays, but a mix of these new products being immensely popular and the current global chip shortage seems like the most likely answer.

In case you’ve missed the news – there is an ongoing global semiconductor shortage at the moment. The lack of these crucial chips, which are found in a dizzying number of products, is causing havoc to new and existing products. Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke last month about the issues the tech firm was facing especially with products that use its new M1 processor – a chip that powers both the new iMac and iPad Pro.

“We expect to be supply-gated, not demand-gated,” Mr Cook told analysts during a recent earnings calls. “The shortages primarily affect ‌iPad‌ and Mac. We will do our best, that’s what I can tell you.”

If you have pre-ordered a new iMac or iPad Pro then it looks like you are in for a treat when they finally arrive on your doorstep.

The new iMac has been completely rebooted with a new design, bigger 24-inch screen, upgraded webcam and keyboard that now gets a Touch ID security scanner for a faster way to unlock the display and buy products with Apple Pay. The M1-powered PC is also now much more powerful than before with Apple promising speeds that are around two times faster than its 21.5-inch predecessor.

If it’s the iPad Pro in your shopping basket then this tablet is also getting some significant upgrades including that mighty M1 chip and a Retina XDR mini-LED display which is brighter and more packed with colour.

There’s also a new Face ID camera that now tracks your movement so you always stay in shot during your Zoom calls and it can be ordered with a whopping 2TB hard drive.

One final update that could come in handy is access to 5G data speeds which allows you to download files at speeds in excess of 300Mbps when away from fixed-line broadband. If the new iMac and iPad Pro are on your shopping list it might be a good idea to get your order in as it could be quite a wait before these devices arrive on your desk.
