Jordi Alba has become the third Barcelona player to test positive for Covid-19 as the club bids to tackle an outbreak in the squad.

Head coach Xavi will be waiting to see if that is the full extent of the outbreak, or whether there are more cases to be confirmed in the coming days.

A statement from the club on Tuesday morning confirmed: ‘First-team player Jordi Alba has tested positive for COVID-19, ruling him out of Tuesday afternoon’s training session at Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper from 6pm CET.

‘The player is in good health and self-isolating at home. The Club has reported the case to the relevant authorities.’

Barcelona are currently on a winter break, and are not due back in action until Sunday January 2 when they face Real Mallorca. Alba will now miss the match.

They are currently sat seventh in the Liga table, and are two points off the Champions League places. They are a whopping 18 points behind rivals and league leaders Real Madrid.

The Covid outbreak brings down the curtain on what has been a tough year for Barcelona. As well as losing talisman Lionel Messi in the summer, the club have been forced to say goodbye to Sergio Aguero too after the Argentine was forced to retire with a heart condition.
