Christmas is a time for giving – but Quality Street, Celebrations and Roses seem to think it’s a time for taking too.

Confectionery giants Nestle, Mars, Incorporated and Cadbury have slimmed down their chocolate tubs by up to 50 per cent since 2009 – and the offerings this season are smaller than last winter’s.

Cadbury’s Roses weighed 1,100g more than a decade ago, while they were cut to 660g in 2018, before being reduced in 2022 to 600g. This year’s tubs for UK customers weigh 550g.

Nestle’s Quality Street, meanwhile, weighed a whopping 1,200g in 2009. But now it weighs just 600g, a decrease of 120g in 2018.

Mars, Incorporated’s Celebrations – which include a mix of the brand’s popular chocolate bars in miniature form – have also fallen in size this year compared to last winter.

A box is now 600g, 50g less than the tubs available in 2022. In 2009, the tins weighed 975g.

The Christmas chocolate tubs are usually available for around £5, or sometimes £4 when special offers are released across UK supermarkets.

MailOnline has contacted Nestle, Mars, Incorporated and Cadbury for a comment.

It comes after John Lewis launched its Christmas shop featuring the much-loved Quality Street pick ‘n’ mix – and a fan favourite flavour has returned after an absence of two decades.

Customers can fill a new 1.2kg tin for £15 with their choice of 12 chocolates – including the previously discontinued Coffee Creme.

For £17, tins can be personalised with a name before being loaded with a selection of favourites, such as Strawberry Delight or Caramel Swirl.

John Lewis has even partnered with Quality Street on a bespoke tin this Christmas. Alternatively, an old tub may be refilled for £12.50.

Otherwise, customers can fill their own advent calendar (£14) or a Quality Street cracker.

The Christmas offerings follow Quality Street’s decision to bring back the formerly discontinued flavour Coffee Crème, after 20 years.

The much-loved confectioner said that the popular flavour will be available to UK-based fans.

The return of Coffee Creme comes after Quality Street polled the nation on their favourite retro sweet, and the findings revealed Coffee Creme to be the number one most-loved retro sweet.

But fans of the flavour only have until Christmas 2023 to enjoy the treat, as after the festive period, it will disappear from the selection box once again.

The chocolate, made from a decadent coffee fondant, is exclusively available at John Lewis and Waitrose retailers.

Quality Street Brand Manager, Samantha Hirst said: ‘We’ve been keeping the exciting news of the return of the Coffee Creme tightly under wraps so it’s a huge relief to finally share it with fans across the UK.

‘We know it was the one that fans were keen to bring back when we asked the nation back in 2021, so it’s safe to say that we’re anticipating we’ll see some smiling faces at the news!’

John Lewis has also extended its returns period, allowing customers to return purchases made between 27 September and 24 December until 23 January 2024.
