An elderly NHS doctor has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a 48-year-old patient at a hospital.

Dr Isyaka Mamman, now 78, is accused of carrying out a routine medical procedure which resulted in the death of Shahida Varven in 2018.

The 48-year-old patient collapsed whilst giving a sample of her bone marrow at Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester, a court previously heard. She died shortly after the procedure began.

It is alleged that Mamman, a haematologist, pierced soft tissue around Mrs Varven’s heart – not breastbone – with a hypodermic needle.
