Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has not made any changes to his circle of friends after being suspended 25 games for flashing firearms on live video multiple times.

Morant recently made his return from said suspension – which began after he was shown waving a gun around on Instagram Live a second time last season.

The guard’s father, Tee, spoke to Sirius XM NBA Radio hosts Justin Termine and Eddie Johnson and said his son is surrounded by educated people and does not feel the need to change who he is associating with.

‘We got the same circle. We got the same circle,’ Tee said on air.

Tee added, ‘It’s always funny that people want you to change your circle even if, like, he don’t have no killers around him.

‘He’s got educated people around him. But everyone else thinks, “Okay, this person is this, this person is that.” No! Everybody knows their task.

‘It was a bad decision. But it wasn’t a crime.’

In the aftermath of Morant’s second suspension, multiple figures in the basketball world – such as ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith and former players Kevin Garnett and Tony Allen – advised Morant that he should surround himself with ‘the right people’ to avoid such incidents in the future.

As a part of his return to the NBA, Morant was required to complete a program which ‘directly addresses the circumstances that led him to repeat his destructive behavior’.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said recently that the former second-overall pick had complied with the league’s requirements for reinstatement.

Morant was seen waving a gun around the first time while on IG Live at a nightclub outside of Denver, Colorado back in March. He was retroactively suspended six games, meaning he missed no further time.

But he was hit with a 25 game suspension in May after he was seen doing the same thing on a friend’s IG Live stream. Memphis had already been eliminated from the playoffs.

In his return on Tuesday, Morant hit a game-winning bucket to cap off a 34 point night in a 115-113 beating of the New Orleans Pelicans. Memphis is 2-0 since Morant returned.
