Two Milton High School students were arrested on murder charges in the shooting death of a 24-year-old man on Wednesday night.
Alpharetta police and the North Fulton SWAT team apprehended Cameron Walker, 17, and Jonathan Murray, 18. They are also charged with criminal attempt to commit armed robbery in the death of Connor Mediate, a recent Kennesaw State University graduate, on Oct. 14.
Walker and Murray are both members of Milton’s varsity basketball team and played in the team’s 83-47 win over Roswell on Wednesday before their arrests. Walker, who signed with George Mason University on Nov. 10, led the defending state champions with 17 points.
Both teens are being held without bond in the Fulton County Jail.
“The arrests follow an intense monthlong investigation that identified the two Milton High School student athletes as the perpetrators,” the police department said in a statement posted to Facebook.
Mediate was found unconscious in a pool of blood at the Collingwood Apartments. The first officers to arrive tried to give the Milton man first aid, but he was declared dead at the scene, according to a police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
According to his obituary, Mediate was a former varsity football player at St. Francis High School, from which he graduated in 2016. He attended KSU and earned Dean’s List honors in his final two years before graduating in 2020.
His family said Mediate’s love of cars was surpassed only by his passion for fishing, and he “uniquely combined an independent spirit and strong will with kind-heartedness and warmth that made him an infectious personality.”
Milton’s athletic director, Gary Sylvestri, called the arrests of Walker and Murray shocking.
“These events do not reflect what we stand for nor what it means to be a student at Milton High School,” he said on Twitter. “We are here for you, prepared to offer resources to students who may be affected by this news.”
