Woolworths and Coles shoppers are up in arms over the ‘exorbitant’ pricing of a tradition Christmas dessert – but there may be a good reason behind the cost.

The Aussie supermarket is selling Ray’s Traditional Home Made Plum Puddings in various sizes for between $35 and $80.

Customers were quick to criticise what they called a ‘price gouge’ however others pointed out the puddings were made by a small family business that sells its foodstuffs for similar prices.

‘Woolworths, please tell me that you’re pulling my leg with these prices,’ one man said in a Facebook post after spotting the Christmas desserts in the supermarket fridges.

The plum puddings were $35 for 900g, $52 for 1.4kg, $67 for 1.8kg and $80 2.3kg in at Woolworths.

Coles have the same prices for each size online however some have spotted them on the shelves for much more.

‘Passing the dairy section when I saw this. Is this exorbitant or is it just me?’ another man wrote in a Reddit post after seeing the Ray’s 1.8kg pudding at a Coles store for $72.

Shoppers were outraged over the ‘unaffordable’ price tag with one saying: ‘$72 for something nobody is going to eat because they’re disgusting?’.

‘That’s got $36 ‘half price special’ next week written all over it, no way that’s actually what they expected people to pay,’ another agreed.

‘$72 for something my mum and auntie will have a nibble of before the rest is chucked in the bin because everyone else ate the giant tiramisu I made,’ a third added.

‘Hoping my partner and I can put a down payment for our very own plum pudding this year,’ laughed a fourth.

However not everyone was angered by the $80 puddings as Ray’s Traditional Home Made Plum Puddings Pty Ltd have been hand-making the desserts in Melbourne since the 1930s.

‘It’s a small family run practice I believe. All handmade with quality ingredients. Paying their workers actual wages. And honestly it’s pretty delicious,’ one sweet tooth said.

‘Ray’s is considered to be one of the better ones and ingredients are becoming expensive,’ another replied.

‘Ray’s is a god tier pud and has always been expensive. Just wait for after Christmas and pick them up for super cheap if you’re craving pud,’ someone recommended.

A Woolworths spokesperson told FEMAIL said the puddings go a long way and the supermarket has many budget-friendly Christmas dessert alternatives.

‘We support a number of Australian suppliers to help bring their unique products to market. This particular product has been handmade since 1930, and at 1.8 kilos serves 16 people,’ they said.

‘We know people are looking for value so all our stores also offer a range of value options starting from our Classic Plum Pudding which is $5.50.’
