Edwin van der Sar has been repatriated to his native Netherlands as he continues his recovery from a brain haemorrhage.

The 52-year-old goalkeeper was rushed to hospital via helicopter after suffering a brain hemorrhage on holiday in Croatia earlier this month.

A statement from Ajax confirmed that the former Manchester United star’s condition remains stable and non-life threatening.

‘Edwin has been repatriated from Croatia on Friday evening and is currently in the intensive care unit of a Dutch hospital.

‘His situation remains the same: stable, in a non-life-threatening condition and communicative.

‘The Van der Sar family would like to express their deep gratitude to the ‘University Hospital of Split’ for their great care during the last week.

‘Edwin has to remain in the intensive care unit where he will be investigated further, and the family fervently hope he can focus on his recovery afterwards.’

Earlier this week fellow former United star Jaap Stam passed on his best wishes to his international teammate.

‘We all send our love to Edwin,’ Stam told Manchester United’s website.

‘We know him very well and it’s always shocking to hear that things like this are happening now.

‘Edwin has always been very sporty, you know, and he always exercises a lot. So you don’t expect this to happen to a former player, and a former team-mate.

‘He’s been living a stressful life before, at Ajax of course, in the job that he was in [chief executive]. Then, probably six or seven weeks after leaving the club and being on holiday, this is happening to him and his family.

‘Of course, it is a huge impact for them and for everybody that knows him, as well. So we wish him all the love and we wish all the best to him and his family.

‘Hopefully, he is going to recover well and he’s going to be staying safe.’

Van der sar joined United in 2005, with the club still attempting to fill the void left following Peter Schmeichel’s departure six years prior.

The Dutchman quickly endeared himself to United fans thanks to his incredible reflexes, strong positional sense and distribution skills.

After going trophliess in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford, the Dutchman would go on to win four Premier League trophies at United and pulled off the crucial save to deny Nicolas Anelka’s penalty as United triumphed over Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final.
