As temperatures cool, many people will be switching on their heating to warm up.

However, with a cost of living crisis raging on in the UK, many people are looking for ways to save money on their energy bills while still switching their heating on.

With this in mind, plumber Allen Hart from Leeds has shared a simple hack on TikTok where he has a whopping 114,000 followers.

In a video from last year, the plumber suggested turning down the maximum flow temperature on a boiler to save money on your energy bills.

The flow temperature is the temperature your boiler heats your water to before it flows to your radiators. Your boiler heats the water to the flow temperature which is usually 80C.

However, if you have a combi-boiler, you can make a simple change which could save you money on your energy bills.

Combi-boilers are the most common type of boiler model used in the UK and provide both hot water and heating.

Allen checked the flow temperature on a combo-boiler in the video and saw it was set to 80C.

Rather than leaving it on the default temperature, he re-set it to 65C for both the heating and hot water which could “help to reduce your energy bills”, according to Allen.

Those with combi-boilers can turn their flow temperature down so it’s worth checking what type you have to see if you can save some money.

However, Allen warned that those with a hot water cylinder should not turn their flow temperature down too low.

Those with a hot water cylinder should keep the temperature at around 60C to avoid bacteria and germs from growing. Legionella bacteria can thrive at temperatures between 20C and 45C.

Those with combi-boilers can turn their flow temperatures down to save money on their energy bills as legionella bacteria only breeds in standing water and in combi-boilers the water keeps flowing.

Allen added: “Just turn the flow temperature down and your boiler will be more efficient and still burn the same amount of gas.”

When the flow temperature is reduced, it means the boiler is using less gas which will save you money on your energy bills.
