They may have missed the AFL finals, but Geelong is an early contender for this year’s Mad Monday dressed and fairest award.

The reigning premiers officially bowed out of contention in their loss to St Kilda in the penultimate round of the competition, with a trio of players undergoing surgery during the week.

That gave the Cats players plenty of time to come up with costume ideas and they absolutely nailed it, re-enacting some of the most controversial moments of the AFL season.

Perhaps the most controversial scenes this year came at Adelaide Oval when Crows star Ben Keays kicked what he thought was the winning goal against Sydney – only to be denied by the goal umpire, who was blasted for not checking a replay of the shot.

Had the goal been awarded, the Crows would have made it into the finals.

Geelong players hilariously re-enacted that scene, with Tom Hawkins and Cameron Guthrie dressing as the goal posts while Isaac Smith pulled on the Adelaide guernsey to play the role of Keays.

Another hilarious touch was Gryan Miers rocking up dressed as Argentinian World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi.

Earlier in the year a fake account pretending to be veteran broadcaster Gerard Whateley had praised Miers, comparing him to the Argentina great.

‘Gryan Miers is to AFL what Leo Messi is to soccer. Messi may kick more goals, but Miers scans the field just as well. Maybe even better than Messi does,’ the account read.

That led to the real Whateley blowing up deluxe and demanding fans stop sharing the post on social media.

‘I never said this and it should be removed,’ he wrote.

On air on SEN he said: ‘It’s an odd world and I’m not sure how you would guard against it, but that quote is being peddled around with my image but those are not my words.

‘Maybe you could take it up for me, maybe you could reply to those who are posting it and tell them that is just a fake quote,’ he continued.

‘And if you know anything about it, you might enlighten me. Those are not my words and those who are posting it should immediately delete it.’

To complete the look, Max Holmes dressed as Whateley, complete with his Tweet asking for the post to be removed.

Retiring champion Patrick Dangerfield arrived dressed as Maverick from Top Gun while a host of players took on a Harry Potter theme.

It is the second year running that Geelong has dominated Mad Monday proceedings.

In 2022 a host of players arrived as pensioners following claims they were too old to win the premiership.

Star forward Jeremy Cameron dressed as a chicken and lost his premiership medal to a cow later that night.

Meanwhile, at Punt Road in Melbourne, retiring Richmond champion Jack Riewoldt has taken a cheeky shot at his former coach Damien Hardwick.

He arrived dressed in full Gold Coast Suns regalia to honour his former triple-premiership winning mentor.
