Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar is expected to leave the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer.

The news of his surprise move comes after the former Arsenal target reportedly rejected a move to Manchester United.

Aouar’s contract with the French club he’s been at his whole career expires this June.

The one-time France international has been linked with a move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs for some time, but no deal has ever materialised.

Now, after 14 years with his boyhood club, the star is expected to sign for 2022 Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of his contract.

According to Sport1, talks have entered an advanced stage and Eintracht are willing to hand Aouar a signing-on bonus worth £4.4million due to there being no transfer fee involved in the deal.

The German outlet also reports that Man United saw a move for him rejected in the summer when Erik ten Hag was scouring the market for new midfielders. He was also linked with Nottingham Forest.

Fellow Premier League side Arsenal were keen on signing the midfielder in 2020, but their £33m bid wasn’t enough to match Lyon’s valuation which was reported to be £55m.

This season Aouar has made only nine appearances in Ligue 1 thanks to a string of injury issues, scoring just one goal and recording one assist in all competitions.

Those stats are a far cry from his output between 2017 and 2022, when there was only one season in which he didn’t manage to reach double figures for goals and assists combined in Ligue 1.

Since making his senior debut for Lyon in 2017, Aouar has made 225 appearances for the club, scoring 41 goals and making 36 assists.
