Arsenal must recruit another striker in the January transfer window following Gabriel Jesus’s injury, talkSPORT has been told.

The Premier League leaders were dealt a huge blow when their Brazilian star Jesus sustained an injury at the World Cup, and they’ve been warned they could face a worse version of the end of last season if they don’t sign a replacement.

Jesus is expected to be out for three months as he recovers from surgery after suffering medial ligament damage to his knee in Brazil’s match against Cameroon in the group stages in Qatar.

And ex-Tottenham star Darren Ambrose thinks the Gunners will really miss their versatile frontman when the Premier League restarts on Boxing Day.

“The injury they’ve picked up with Gabriel Jesus sustaining one in the World Cup, that’s a huge loss,” the former midfielder told talkSPORT.

“Although he’s not prolific in terms of goalscoring, what he gives that side, the desire, just the contribution he gives Arsenal is fantastic.”

Jesus has scored five times this campaign for the Gunners since his move from Manchester City in the summer, but he also set up seven of his new club’s other goals as they cemented their spot at the top of the league for Christmas.

Mikel Arteta’s side do have striker Eddie Nketiah at their disposal – the young English striker has three goals this season but none in 12 appearances in the Premier League.

However, teammate Oleksandr Zinchenko has backed him to fill Jesus’s boots.

Ambrose, though, believes Arsenal will know they need to invest in the January window, having learned their lesson from last season when they failed to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and went on to lose their Champions League spot to Tottenham.

He continued: “I don’t personally think Eddie Nketiah comes in and gives Arsenal what Gabriel Jesus does.

“Potentially I think Mikel Arteta might have to look in the January transfer window, which I’m sure they will.

“You think of last January they didn’t sign anyone and I think that was there undoing towards the back end of the season when Spurs pipped them to the Champions League spot.

“I think they’ll have learned off that and will go big in this transfer window.”

Arsenal have been linked with an interest in Ferran Torres – another star Arteta coached during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

Like Jesus, the Barcelona star has also netted five times this season.

However, former Arsenal star Yohan Djourou recently told talkSPORT of his doubts about that move, saying the Spaniard hasn’t been at his best since his transfer to the Nou Camp.

He added: “A player like Ferran Torres at Barcelona? That could be interesting.

“But I don’t feel that Ferran has shown enough in the Premier League, or at Barcelona either.”
