The Duchess of York has revealed her life was saved during breast surgery when a skin specialist insisted that moles be checked for signs of cancer.

Sarah Ferguson, 64, who disclosed last week that she is battling skin cancer, has told friends she owes her life to Dr Catherine Borysiewicz, a dermatologist married to a top plastic surgeon.

Dr Borysiewicz, 44, works at the private King Edward VII Hospital in London, where Sarah had reconstructive surgery last year following breast cancer.

Dr Borysiewicz asked that several moles be removed and analysed at the same time as the operation.

Sarah then learned that one mole was malignant and she was diagnosed with skin cancer just before Christmas.

A friend said: ‘Sarah feels she owes Catherine her life. It was purely thanks to her vigilance that moles were removed when she was in hospital for reconstructive surgery after her mastectomy for breast cancer. It was then that the skin cancer was detected.

‘If Catherine hadn’t insisted, these moles would not have been checked. We’re talking about an aggressive cancer here with the potential to spread. Now everyone is praying that it’s been caught at the earliest stage.’

Dr Borysiewicz, a former NHS consultant, is listed in the prestigious Tatler Address Book, a lifestyle directory for the wealthy, where she is praised for her ‘friendly, approachable style’.

She has been married to leading London plastic surgeon Theo Nanidis since 2005 and they have a son and daughter. Her Instagram page reveals romantic trips with her husband, enjoying Michelin star dinners and sunsets on the isle of Santorini, Greece.

Dr Borysiewicz has worked with beauty brand L’Oreal and commented on skin conditions for the Daily Mail and other publications. She is chair of Royal Marsden Partners skin cancer group and a spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists.

The Duchess of York has spent weeks recuperating at the luxury Mayrlife clinic in Austria and is now resting at home in Windsor.

She was aware of skin cancer risks after it killed her childhood friend Carolyn Cotterell in 1999.
