Going to college

Taylor set records at Norman High School in Norman, Oklahoma, but not many colleges wanted to hire him. Even the Oklahoma Sooners, the team from his home state, didn’t pick him. In 2002, he signed with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. His first year, he sat out as a redshirt. The next year, he filled in as a backup and completed the only pass he tried. He then moved on to Butler Community College in Kansas, where he had a big year. He led Butler to the NJCAA championship game and was named to the second team of NJCAA All-Americans.

Taylor looked at several NCAA Division I schools after his 2004 season, such as Memphis, Marshall, and Nebraska. Nebraska had been using a running/option offense for a long time, but their new coach, Bill Callahan, decided to switch to a West Coast offense. In 2004, the Huskers had a season of rebuilding. They went 5–6 and didn’t make a bowl game for the first time since 1968. Because the Huskers didn’t have a quarterback at the time, his recruitment by the Huskers late in the 2004–2005 off-season was called a “lucky break.”

Taylor’s 2005 season at Nebraska didn’t start out well. In his first three games, he completed 39 of 89 passes for 399 yards, scored one touchdown, and threw three picks. Taylor, on the other hand, had a big day in his fourth game against Iowa State. He threw for a school record 431 yards on 36 of 55 passes and two touchdowns, which was a big deal. At the time, the 36 completions were also a school record. Five weeks later, the Cornhuskers lost to Kansas for the first time in 37 years because he could only throw for 117 yards against them. During the season, he had good and bad games. The season ended with a 30–3 win against Colorado, in which he threw for 392 yards,[4] and a come-from-behind 32–28 win against the Michigan Wolverines in the Alamo Bowl, in which he threw a Nebraska bowl record 3 touchdown passes. Taylor set a new school record for passing yards in a season with 2,653 yards. He did this by completing 55.1% of his passes.

Taylor’s 2006 season opener against Louisiana Tech was a big step up from his 2005 season opener. He completed 22 of 33 passes for 287 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The next game, against Nicholls State, Taylor showed again how well he could throw the ball. He finished 19 of 23 passes for 202 yards and a new career-high four touchdowns.

Taylor led the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a 9–3 record and to the Big 12 Championship Game in 2006, where they played the Oklahoma Sooners. During the regular season, Taylor threw for 2,789 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
