Hojlund can’t make Sheff United pay!

Wes Foderingham misplaced a pass while out of his goal and it went straight to Marcus Rashford. He found Rasmus Hojlund on the edge of the area while Foderingham scampered back into his goal but the Great Dane couldn’t make the opponents pay. His shot is low and down the middle and, crucially, saved.

That was a scary moment for the hosts. Could have easily been a goal.

Rhian Brewster makes instant impact!

Well, talk about impact subs!

Rhian Brewster had a sight of goal from 25 yards and didn’t hesitate to whack a shot towards Andre Onana, who parried his powerful shot. Jonny Evans cleared.

Pretty easy to deal with because of the range but that was a forward-thinking move from Brewster, who could have just as easily played a dull pass.

Sheff Utd sub: Brewster on for McBurnie

Rhian Brewster is on for Oli McBurnie, who looks injured.

A chance to score his first Premier League goal.

Oli Norwood strikes well and forces save!

Oli Norwood cannoned a shot towards goal after James McAtee teed him up and Andre Onana had to tip over the bar. Good strike from 20 yards out.

Rashford stopped in his tracks

Marcus Rashford showed tricky feet dribbling in from the left. Nobody seemed to be able to stop him as he edged closer to the goal but he eventually ran into a brick wall.

Second half kicks off

Man United get us underway.

Oli McBurnie delivers

What did we say about this man before kick-off? He has the potential to be a real bruiser in the Premier League, and more than that: a decent goalscorer.

His spot-kick was powerful and he has been a real presence and headache for the Man United defence.

A tasty second half beckons.

Talking point: Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire had a solid first half.

The Man United defender has been under fire for some time but his team have a habit of winning when he plays.

Whether or not that will transpire today remains to be seen, but the centre-back is making his case for more football after a decent international break.

Initial reaction

Lots to talk about from that half but I think the major theme is just how good Sheffield United were.

They looked nothing like a side at the bottom of the table. This isn’t just some plucky, battling performance from them – for large swathes of the game they’ve been on top.

Man United have had their moments and when they’ve been bearing down on goal, they’ve looked more dangerous than their opponents have. Rasmus Hojlund is looking lively but the service to him has been mixed.

HALF-TIME: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

Jack Robinson big challenge!

Man United attacked down the left, but Jack Robinson slid into Scott McTominay with a crunching challenge – and a clean one at that.

Big cheers from the crowd for a thunderous tackle.

Hojlund chance!

The flag stays down as Marcus Rashford’s shot deflects to Rasmus Hojlund at point-blank range, but Wes Foderingham does well to smother his effort and it’s out for a corner.

He did look offside but nothing given.

United do little with the corner.

Bruno Fernandes’ shot glances off the bar!

Bruno nearly made Sheffield United pay there.

It was a sumptuous free-kick over to the left top corner and Wes Foderingham was stock-still with no chance of saving. Luckily his woodwork does it for him .

Man United free-kick

Oli Norwood needs to watch it.

His late challenge on Bruno Fernandes has given Man United a free-kick on the edge of the area.

We’ve got a game on our hands now!

Well, this has really kicked off!

Scott McTominay has gone from hero to zero. His goal was against the run of play, but then minutes later he needlessly moves his left hand out and blocks the ball to give away a penalty.

Sheffield United probably deserve to be ahead on the balance of things.

GOAL! Sheffield United 1-1 Manchester United! Oli McBurnie!

A roar from the crowd as their big man up top smashes a penalty off the right post. No chance saving that but Andre Onana went the right way.

Sheffield United penalty!

Scott McTominay committed handball after a ball into the box. Clear handball as his left hand goes towards it.

GOAL! Sheffield United 0-1 Manchester United! Scott McTominay!

A bobbling shot finds its way in!

The ball took an age to come out of the air but McTominay volleys first time from inside the box and it rolls in.

Diogo Dalot kickstarted the attack with a looping cross but nobody got on the end of it. United passed around until Bruno Fernandes’s ball was deflected, but it pings into the air and falls at the grateful feet of United’s scorer.

Man United sloppy in possession

The Red Devils were on the attack there but Diogo Dalot had other ideas and passed straight to a red and white shirt. Poor.

Cameron Archer forces save and wins corner!

Big chance for Sheffield United as Cameron Archer drives through midfield and shoots low from range, but Andre Onana saves.

Diogo Dalot has to clear for a corner before anyone makes the rebound.

Onana back playing – all is well

Andre Onana down

Andre Onana is being treated with what looks like a hamstring issue.

He collided with Jonny Evans a couple of minutes ago while claiming a cross out of the sky and it’s not clear exactly what is wrong.

Antony volleys wide

Antony takes the ball out of the sky in the box and…. flunks his lines. A miscue that goes wide.

Man United counter

Antony cuts in on his left and tries to curl a shot, but it’s not hard to save.

Jayden Bogle had surged forward for Sheffield United but he was stopped by a forthright challenge and Man United countered quickly. From there they weren’t predatory enough and chose to go back, with the ball eventually ending up at the whirring feet of Antony, which can’t produce the goods on this occasion.

Oliver Norwood chops Antony

Bad challenge there from Oli Norwood on Antony inside Man United’s half. Nothing too malicious but poorly timed and he fells the winger, who falls in a heap. Clear foul.

Man United on the back foot

James McAtee jinxed inside and floated a cross in, but Sofyan Amrabat was a good shield and headed away.

Erik ten Hag’s side haven’t started so well. They’ve tried a lob through to Rasmus Hojlund but it was too rushed and too long and Wes Foderingham claimed with ease.

Ping-pong in the air

Plenty of headers flying about here. We’ve just seen a sequence of, what, a dozen headers bouncing about in Man United’s half?

Harry Maguire is a big aerial presence for United and it’s little surprise to see him start in this sort of game.

Sheffield United start well

Man United have struggled to get out of their own half due to the Blades’ energetic pressing.

Oli McBurnie is the focal point so far – on the ground, not in the air – and occasionally they’re playing it to Cameron Archer over to the left to try and stretch the defence.

Good start from Sheffield United.

Oli McBurnie chance!

Gustavo Hamer took a shot from range and it deflected off Sofyan Amrabat. It falls through to Oli McBurnie in the box, who cracks a shot off, but it’s weak and straight at Andre Onana.

Sheffild United free-kick

Oliver Norwood swings a cross into the area from a deep free-kick but United deal with it with a header. Didn’t clear the first man.

Tributes for Sir Bobby Charlton and for victims in Israel and Gaza

Flowers have been laid on the pitch for Sir Bobby Charlton and players observe a Sir Bobby Charlton and pay respects to the victims of the crisis in Israel and Gaza.

There’s clapping all round and chanting as a picture of Charlton is displayed on the screen in the ground.

The players are out!

The players are lining up and shaking hands.

Paul Heckingbottom: ‘We’ve been close on numerous occasions’

Paul Heckingbottom insists that Sheffield United have been close to getting points on the board several times.

That wasn’t the case last time out in a bruising 8-0 loss to Newcastle, but the Blades have been well in games this season and, if not for some late drama against Spurs, they would have had the points there.

He told Sky Sports: ‘We know how close we’ve been on numerous occasions.

‘We know we have to get ourselves in a position to see games out.

‘No matter how well we’re playing, no matter how well United are playing, they’ve got players who can have moments that can take the game away from you.

‘Our concentration has to be there for the full amount of time and only if we perform that way will we get the points.’

Scott McTominay pays tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton: ‘It’s devastating’

Scott McTominay spoke to Sky Sports about Sir Bobby Charlton’s passing.

‘It’s devastating. He was an icon of the football club and all over the world people knew him for being a legend of the game and more importantly such an incredible guy as well.

‘For me, it’s tough. Everyone is going into the game tonight thinking of him and wanting to do their best for Bobby.’

Pre-match predictions?

Less than 15 minutes to go until kick-off now, so get yourselves in the comments and give us predictions: scores, scorers, mistakes, anything. We want to hear it.

Erik ten Hag pays tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton

Erik ten Hag told Man United’s social media team: ‘The world world is losing a big personality, a legend, a giant, on and off the pitch.’

A handful up top for Sheffield United

Sheffield United have only scored six goals this league campaign, but with these two up top, you get the sense any day could, in theory, be a net-busting one.

Cameron Archer’s performance against Everton showed exactly what he is capable of as he bagged a first-half goal. He ran riot that day, and the speedy youngster’s pairing with Oli McBurnie is something of a traditional one – a target man powerhouse nodding balls down to a footballing whippet.

Both have produced the goods at Championship level, but the step up has not been easy. Can they fire the Blades to safety?

Head-to-head record and stats

Clouds gather over Bramall Lane as the Red Devils arrive. But what does history tell us?

Well, these sides have met ten times in the Premier League. The Blades have won two and drawn one, with United claiming seven victories.

For 24 meetings in a row, United have found the net against their adversaries – you have to go back 51 years to find a match where they didn’t score against the Yorkshire outfit.

They’re on a run of nine successive wins against newly promoted teams, but beware the curse of winning. United have lost six of 11 games this season and whenever they get a win in the league, it’s followed up by a loss.

A Chris Basham update

Don’t worry, Sheffield United fans. We haven’t forgotten about you.

It was heartwarming to hear this week that Chris Basham’s recovery is going well. Some feared that his injury would signal the end of his career at the top level. But the 35-year-old is a determined man and has put on a brave face despite his stint in hospital.

Paul Heckingbottom seemed fairly certain that down the line, the Blades will have him back.

Where’s Casemiro?

Manchester United’s injury list is a rather in-vogue destination at the moment, mocked with stars. Casemiro has joined Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, and Kobbie Mainoo on the sidelines. Sergio Reguilon could have made the squad but isn’t quite there.

But could Casemiro’s absence be a blessing in disguise? Erik ten Hag is forced to respond, to switch things up, to adapt. Sofyan Amrabat has got the nod today and he’ll be doing his best to impress.

Sheffield United release their line-up

James McAtee and Jack Robinson return to the Blades’ line-up.

Paul Heckingbottom said that Chris Basham’s recovery was progressing fine after his horror ankle fracture earlier this season, but he is still out and in hospital. Defednder Anel Ahmedhodžić is also unavailable.

Manchester United release their line-up

As suspected, Rasmus Hojlund leads the line for United despite his mid-week fracas with the San Marino players, who he accused of being too physical.

Victor Lindelof also features after a horrible week in which two Sweden fans were shot dead by a lone gunman befroe his nation’s Euro 2024 qualifier with Belgium.

Sofyan Amrabat is in despite missing both of Morocco’s international fixtures. Raphael Varane returns to the bench after his injury, but United will be without Casemiro tonight. More on that later.

Andre Onana warned to ‘step up’

Before the team news starts rolling in, let’s look at some more of Erik ten Hag’s pre-match quotes.

The Dutchman has told undre-fire goalkeeper, Andre Onana, that performances need to improve.

That said, he also notes that other great Manchester United goalkeepers down the years didn’t hit the ground running. Peter Schmeichel and David de Gea didn’t exactly set the world alight as soon as they arrived, and Ten Hag has stressed the need for an ‘integration’ period.

The fact that Man United have conceded 12 goals in their first eight league games this season is a team problem, not just an Onana one. All the same, a couple of months into the campaign, Ten Hag has told his goalkeeper that now is the time to ‘step up’.

Read more of his comments below.

Erik ten Hag warns about complacency

Erik ten Hag has warned his team about complacency against their winless opponents tonight.

United have hardly had a rosy start themselves, losing four of their opening eight Premier League fixture – and they’re bottom of their Champions League group just to compound their woes.

‘Every game is very difficult,’ Ten Hag told United’s official website. ‘You have seen they have had really good performances but in that moment, they don’t get the result.’

Read more of what he had to say below.

Tributes paid to Sir Bobby Charlton

Some of the key figures who knew Sir Bobby Charlton well have paid their respects to the football legend.

Among them are Sir Geoff Hurst, David Beckham, and Gary Neville.

There will be a minute of silence held at Bramall Lane before kick-off tonight.

One of football’s true greats

When you hear people speak about Sir Bobby Charlton, they don’t just speak of a phenomenal player, but also a gentleman.

Gary Neville called him Manchester United’s greatest worldwide ambassador earlier today, and that goes some way to showing the effect he had. Even after he hung up his boots, stuffed with trophies and a Ballon d’Or, he stayed close to the game as a manager, director, and consistent voice of wisdom.

Good evening and welcome

Hello and welcome to Mail Sport’s live blog of the build-up and action for Manchester United’s trip to Sheffield United.

Today we have a different kind of football match, one far more emotional than usual. Sir Bobby Charlton’s passing has hit football hard – he was one of the true greats of the game and had a special relationship with Manchester United.

Tributes have been flooding in for the England and United legend, and United will be hoping to do their hero proud.

United come into this after a late comeback win against Brentford. They have two stoppage time goals from Scott McTominay to thank for that, but there’s been an international break in between.

Sheffield United sit rock bottom of the table and remain winless after eight games.
