Ella Toone’s has revealed the meaning behind her goal celebration which was again on show after she netted against Australia in the World Cup.

The Manchester United midfielder put England 1-0 up in the first half of their World Cup semi-final win against the host nation in Sydney with a fine strike from inside the box that flew into the top corner.

The strike triggered jubilant scenes from the England fans in the ground as well as the players, who chased Toone as they took the lead in the game.

Toone then kissed her wrist and made a heart gesture in celebration before refocusing ahead of the rest of the game.

Speaking to BBC Five Live before the tournament, the 23-year-old revealed she knew how she would celebrate any goal down under, and she delivered on her on Wednesday.

‘In tournament football moments fall to different people and it’s if you take those moments,’ she said. ‘We’ve definitely had a lot of them throughout the tournament.

‘I’m sure if it falls to me in the box then I’d be buzzing if I put it away. Usually (with celebrations) anything happens.

‘But, I’m on strict orders from my mates. We all got a matching tattoo before I came out (to Australia). They want me to kiss it and do a little love heart. I promised them I’d do that.’

It took until the semi-final of the tournament for Toone to get on the scoresheet for England, but she is a woman for the big stage after also netting the in the final against Germany following England’s European Championship success last year.

Her strike was almost overshadowed when Sam Kerr equalised in the second half with a fantastic solo effort, dribbling forward in the England half before lettinng fly from 25 yards and beating Mary Earps.

But the celebrations from Australia were short-lived because Lauren put England back in front minutes later when she latched onto a Millie Bright long ball, getting the better of Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter before slotting in.

England saw out the final 20 minutes despite strong pressure from Australia to secure the win and reach their first ever World Cup final, adding a third late on through Alessia Russo.

They will face Spain for the title on Sunday as they look to go back-to-back in major European Championship successes.
