Christy Turlington reveals she was once FIRED from a runway show because she’d gained ‘a little bit of weight’ after she quit SMOKING – as she admits painful incident triggered her to step back from modeling

  • Christy, 54, was punished for the weight gain at the peak of her career
  • The fashion star was then inspired to focus on her education instead
  • Mom-of-two opens up alongside fellow supermodels in new documentary

Christy Turlington has opened up about the shocking moment she was cut from a runway show in Paris because she had gained ‘a little bit of weight’ after she quit smoking.

The fashion icon, 54, became one of the most successful models in history thanks to her cover girl looks and enviable figure, but in Apple TV+ docu-series The Super Models, Christy revealed how she was punished, aged 26, for a slight fluctuation in her weight.

‘In 1996, I remember being in Paris for the couture and I gained a little bit of weight because I’d quit smoking, and… I got released from a show,’ the mother-of-two recalled.

But instead of feeling pressured to embark on a diet or to change her fitness regime, Christy was inspired to step back from working as a full time model and turn her focus to education.

She explained: ‘I remember feeling like, “Well, I’m not gonna let this make me feel bad. I just made a decision for myself which is probably one of the best decisions I’ve made.

‘“And so maybe now is the time. I don’t really want to subject myself to take anymore.”’

The supermodel went on to study at New York University, where she gained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Comparative Religion and Eastern Philosophy.

The model gushed about her university experience, claiming they were the ‘most important years of my life’.

She said: ‘Those were some of the most important years of my life because that’s where I was really able to make the investment in myself and who my future self was gonna be.

‘I just found so much inspiration to do so many other things. It was such an incredible four years.’

Christy’s decision to quit smoking was all the more poignant as her father was diagnosed with lung cancer two years after she was released from the show over her weight.

Dwain Turlington died six months after his diagnosis, at the age of 63. The loss inspired Christy, who first picked up the habit as a teenager, to become an anti-smoking activist.

Elsewhere in the Apple TV+ docuseries, the runway legend opened up about her game-changing career path alongside fellow super models Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista.

The documentary charts the rise of the women who earned millions, dated movie stars and cemented their status of supermodels after that iconic music video for George Michael’s track, Freedom, in 1990.

It’s the first time all four of the surviving icons – Tatjana Patitz died earlier this year of breast cancer – have come together to discuss the phenomenon in depth.

While the series basks in the exceptional beauty of the women it doesn’t shy away from the uglier issues they faced, including domestic abuse and racial inequality.

Typically reserved Linda is seen in tears as she opens up about being left disfigured from a failed cosmetic procedure.

The Canadian beauty also shared claims that her ex-husband Gérald Marie abused her during their five-year marriage.

Cindy recalls an uncomfortable interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1986 that left her feeling like ‘chattel’, while Naomi revealed she is perimenopausal after being captured suffering a ‘hot flush’ during a photoshoot in the docu-series.

The British model also spoke candidly about how her grief and childhood abandonment issues played a large part in her substance abuse battle.

The Supermodels is available to stream now on Apple TV+
