Jonathan Brearly, Chief Executive of OFGEM, outlined the changes on BBC Breakfast this morning.

He said: “We appreciate this is a really difficult time for many families out there, not only financially but all the other pressures we’ve facing with the Covid crisis.

“But the reason we’re making this change is costs in the market fell to their lowest level last year and has come back up again and that is reflected in the prices that people will need to pay.

“The reason we’re doing it now, we’re not delaying this change, is to make sure we don’t have an even bigger change in October next year when people get into winter when we know bills are under most pressure.”
