In 2004 when she was 46, Dorr was diagnosed with minor Thyroid cancer, which she bravely survived. And she felt her marriage and personal life were collapsing, so she decided to start a volunteer rehabilitative dog program, Safe Harbor Prison Dog.
However, after a prisoner threatened Toby, her contact in the warden’s department allegedly assigned John Manard, an inmate, to be her bodyguard for a spell in October 2005. During that time, they fell in love and decided to escape and start a new life somewhere. Toby’s vehicle contained John in a dog crate, and the 48-year-old Dorr drove away, only to be captured two weeks later.
“I think at that point in my life, and I was just desperate to be loved, to feel like somebody loved me.” Dorr added,” I do think that John Maynard loved me to the best of his ability to love anybody at that time. Because he was pretty broken, too.”

Toby thanks Chris for her healing, happiness, and harmony, admitting that he, too, had gone through difficult moments, allowing him to understand her in a way no one else had. Chris did not cringe or scoff at her after knowing about her history. Instead, he acknowledged her feelings and made her feel secure.

Toby Dorr pled guilty to obliging and inciting a jailbreak and bringing contraband into a prison. She had to pay about $7,500 in reparations before being sentenced to 27 months.
She was released in 2008 from a federal prison in Texas. Afterward, Dorr moved back to Kansas with her mother and spent three months feeling uneasy in the city because of her background. As a result, Toby accepted a web-design job in Boston and chose to relocate, only to return by Christmas.

Dorr then reunited with Chris and married again in 2009 in a simple courthouse ceremony. Now she is a social worker helping women overcome emotional traumas via a series of personal growth workshops.
According to her Facebook, in June 2019, Dorr finished the manuscript for her” of escape and redemption” story.
