What Will Steve Wright Do Now And Where Is Going? Steve Wright, a DJ for BBC Radio 2, has announced the end of his weekday afternoon show after more than 20 years.
The eccentric, multi-personality zoo format is attributed with being introduced to British radio by English DJ and radio personality Steve Wright. His Show, Top of the Pops, Auntie’s TV Favorites, and TOTP2 are just a few of the programs Wright has hosted for BBC Television.
Wright has won awards, including the Smash Hits Best DJ of the Year and the 1994 Daily Mirror Readers Poll. For his radio programs, he was given the TRIC Personality of the Year award in 1998.
What Will Steve Wright Do Now?
He will stop hosting Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs on Radio 2 in September, but he won’t be leaving the BBC altogether.
In a statement, Wright noted that he was working on further initiatives for the company, including “interesting new digital programs and podcasts, which will use parts of the afternoon show” and a spin-off of BBC Sounds called Serious Jockin’.
In a change to the daytime schedule, Scott Mills, who presently hosts Radio 1’s afternoon show, will take his position.

While Sara Cox’s drivetime show will be prolonged by an hour and begin at 16:00, the new afternoon show hosted by Mills will be shortened by an hour.
Presenter Mills was dubbed “excellent and flexible” by Wright.
Because of the changes, Mills will no longer host his Saturday morning program on Radio 5 Live and will quit Radio 1, where he has worked since 1998.
Steve Wright Is Leaving The Afternoon show on BBC Radio 2
He began hosting the Steve Wright in the Afternoon program on BBC Radio 1 in 1981. He then briefly hosted Breakfast in 1994, moved to BBC Radio 2 in 1999, and replaced Ed Stewart there.
In 1999, Steve Wright In The Afternoon, the program he had previously aired on Radio 1 from 1981 to 1993, returned to the airwaves on Radio 2.
With him in the Afternoon, Wright transitioned to daytime radio in 1981 and eventually popularized the zoo format in the UK.
Wright only broadcast weekday afternoons from Monday through Thursday until he took over the Steve Wright on Sunday Sunday morning program in 1984.
Mark Page and Paul Jordan continued to host the Friday afternoon program. His Sunday morning show came to an end in 1986, and he switched back to five afternoons each week.
Where Is Steve Wright Going?
Each Sunday (9-11 am), He will continue to host Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs. He will also host a number of Christmas and Easter specials on Radio 2.
He began hosting Steve Wright’s Saturday Show and Sunday Love Songs when he joined BBC Radio 2 in March 1996. In July 1999, he launched his afternoon show. Wright reportedly makes £440,000 annually at Radio 2.
Following changes at Radio 2, in the Afternoon was relaunched in the middle of 1999, with Wright replacing Ed Stewart in this position. Saturday morning Wright’s time slot was replaced by Jonathan Ross.
