Frank Lampard has insisted that Mauricio Pochettino deserves more time as Chelsea manager despite the Blues’ poor start to the season.

Pochettino took over from Lampard in the summer, with the Blues’ all-time leading goal scorer placed in temporary charge following the sacking of Graham Potter earlier on in the season.

He didn’t enjoy too much success but at least stablised the club somewhat before optimism grew with the appointment of the Argentine in the summer.

But the hope hasn’t grown into success, with Chelsea enjoying just one Premier League win from their first six matches prior to their game against Fulham on Monday evening.

Lampard, however, insisted that it would be too soon for his former side to swap manager again, pointing to Pochettino’s previous successes as examples of why he could be the right man for the job.

‘I think he will get patience and I think he deserves it,’ Lampard said. ‘He’s a man that comes with a big pedigree as a coach and I’ve already referenced some of the issues I felt and saw and he’ll have his own version of that. We all want to perform as well as we can in and he needs time.’

Lampard broke down his time at Chelsea, which was his second stint at the club, and explained how there were several issues that weren’t going to be a short-term fix.

One thing that appears has been fixed however is chance creation at the club, even in the absence of new attacking midfield signing Christopher Nkunku.

The Blues have come out on top in all six of their games on xG, but have struggled to convert the chances they have created, with first choice striker Nicolas Jackson netting just once in the league.

Armando Broja netted against Fulham, however, and Pochettino will be hoping it’s a sign of positive things to come.

‘As a coach, I know xG is an indicator of sorts,’ Lampard said. ‘When you get in attacking areas, you are, as a coach, sometimes reliant on finishing and your players, so he will be frustrated with that because that’s what gets you a good start going into that run of games, which breeds confidence.

‘It just generates a sort of negativity in games and even if you are controlling possession and having fair chances and start to miss them, there’s a feeling among the fans, a feeling among the players that if you don’t score, it becomes more tense, then the other team score and that becomes a recurring thing, so they are going to have to break that.’
