They’re two of the most famous men in Britain – but in recent months, it’s been their children’s culinary skills which have been capturing audiences from around the world.

David Beckham, 48, and Jamie Oliver, 47, may come from different industries, but their mega broods of kids are both dabbling within the same arena.

David’s son Brooklyn, 24, has caused a sensation with his online videos as he whips up intricate dishes, with the occasional appearances from Romeo, 20, Cruz, 18, and eleven-year-old Harper.

Meanwhile Jamie has also been sending fans wild with his clips of his 12-year-old son Buddy’s cooking tutorials, with the youngster joined by River, six, and Petal, 14, in recent footage.

Now, experts have revealed how the apparent cooking enthusiasts in the two groups measure up in terms of culinary skills – from Buddy’s ‘first class presenting skills and confidence in the kitchen’ to Brooklyn’s ‘style over substance’.

After flirting with a career as a photographer, David and Victoria Beckham’s eldest son Brooklyn is now focusing his attention on becoming a chef – despite his recipe videos being widely panned online.

Earlier this year, the 24-year-old landed himself in hot water with viewers after he used shop-bought broth to make Scouse soup.

Lisa Marley – who trains aspiring cooks at ProVeg UK – said that it’s evident that Brooklyn – who has admitted he’s never had any training – picked up his cooking techniques by watching online tutorials.

Brooklyn Beckham’s cooking faux pas’

1. Brooklyn was slated by fans for his ‘raw’ meat while whipping up a Sunday dinner

2. His salad and plain spaghetti left much to be desired in a silent cooking tutorial

3. He reportedly hired a film crew for $100,000 to film him making a sandwich

4. He is said to have required assistance with frying a hash brown

5. During a cooking segment on The Today Show, viewers poked fun at him for using fingers to poke the egg yolks so that they don’t stay runny

She said: ‘Brooklyn Beckham has a certain style to his cooking. He has decent knife skills, I would say he has had lessons or has studied videos and tutorials.’

However, she took issue with Brooklyn’s repeated use of the same chopping board.

‘Using the same chopping board for meat, fish and vegetables is never a good idea but if you do, like Brooklyn, you must be fastidious about cleaning in between.’

On top of this, the expert said she ‘cringed’ watching Brooklyn slice a truffle with a mandolin without wearing a protector. She added: ‘I’ve known even experienced chefs that have chopped off the tips of their fingers in an instant.’

Meanwhile, referencing Brooklyn’s truffle tagliatelle, which was dubbed ‘out of touch’ by unimpressed viewers, and raw tuna sushi videos, the expert said the wannabe chef ‘has been making eye wateringly expensive dishes that aren’t sustainable or accessible to most people’.

The expert added: ‘Brooklyn’s recipes and ingredients aren’t accessible to a lot of people. For example truffles, yellowfin tuna and expensive cuts of meat aren’t on most people’s shopping list. However, clearly he is recreating the dishes that he is used to eating.’

Lisa also suggested that Brooklyn’s videos are more about building his brand, rather than being totally informative.

She said: ‘He doesn’t regularly offer any cooking tips, hacks or advice. His recipe videos are more style than actual cooking lessons but by his own admission, he isn’t a trained chef.’

However, Adebola Adeshina, chef patron of The Chubby Castor in Cambridgeshire, told FEMAIL: ‘Despite Brooklyn’s content getting widely slammed online, I admire his on-trend style, which will amplify cooking as a great skill to have to an audience of young people setting up home on their own.

‘I love how he switches from basic pizza to more refined dishes in his repertoire, so it’s a culinary thumbs up from me.’

The chef said: ‘Brooklyn is a very cool young man indeed and obviously knows his food and ingredients well. ‘Putting his privileged background to one side, he shows that anyone of any age can create great dishes in the kitchen with a little know-how.

‘Although he only started cooking during the pandemic, it looks like he has been doing so for much longer than he has. Hats off to him.’

Lisa agreed, commenting: ‘I think Brooklyn may have some competition with Cruz nipping at his heels. Cruz seems like a natural in the kitchen and made his pizza with ease and grace.’

Adebola, meanwhile, added: ‘Food plays a far greater role than providing nourishment in our lives.

‘It creates opportunities for families to learn about responsibility, chores, working together and generally creates an opportunity to spend time as a family, so it’s great to see young people who have grown up with a passion for food, like in these two high-profile families.’

In April, Victoria Beckham shared a fun clip of daughter Harper showing off her cooking skills as she made pizzas with a pal in Miami.

The designer, 48, posted a video of her youngest child, 11, kneading her dough to make a pizza base, laughing as she accidentally poked a hole through it.

Referencing her own meagre talents in the kitchen, Victoria cheekily captioned her post: ‘She cooks like me!’

The clip showed Harper and her pal kneading their dough for their pizza bases in the kitchen, before lifting the stretched dough in the air.

As Harper accidentally poked a hole in her dough, she giggled while Victoria joked that she had inherited her cooking skills from her.

Lisa said: ‘Harper Beckham looks like she is having a great time making the pizza dough but it’s clear she is just starting out her culinary journey… [But] I love that they are encouraging their children to learn important life skills such as cooking.

‘Pizza’s are a good choice for beginners as making the dough is relatively easy. Pizza’s can be made with simple, cheap ingredients and are a firm favourite with children.

Adebola added:’ Harper is simply enjoying being in the kitchen and that is lovely to see. She’s not showing any haute cuisine skills yet, but she is proving that cooking and learning about food is fun, and I applaud David and Victoria for teaching her that.’

He may only be 12 years old – but Buddy Oliver has already started setting the internet alight with his quick and easy-to-follow cooking videos, which his father Jamie has been sharing with his 9.5m Instagram followers.

Along with a family-friendly tuna pasta recipe, Buddy delighted fans when he filmed a video talking viewers through his favourite fajitas.

Speaking to Femail previously, chef Lisa was full of admiration for the primary school student’s chopping skills.

The expert said: ‘Buddy holds his knife with the confidence of someone much older, and gives advice without any self doubt or insecurity.  This can only come from practice and repetition.’

Lisa also highlighted how Buddy’s recipes appeal to viewers who have minimal experience or are trying to make meals on a budget.

Praising the young chef, she said: ‘Buddy comes from a privileged background but credit to his family, he, like his dad, is a man and chef of the people.

‘His recipes are accessible, cost effective and demonstrated in a way in which the most inexperienced cook would be able to follow.’

She added: ‘Buddy is a natural chef with a clear passion for food but more importantly, a passion for sharing and teaching.  Unsurprisingly, being the son of the extremely talented Jamie Oliver, Buddy has clearly been paying attention.

‘Confident in front of the camera and extremely likeable, Buddy Oliver is a star in the making. This is one nepo baby deserving of his success.’

Meanwhile, Adebola Adeshina said: ‘We all hope, to some extent, that our offspring will follow in our footsteps, and I imagine Jamie will be very proud indeed, seeing young Buddy being both the talented chef and charismatic presenter that he is!

‘Young Buddy Oliver shows amazing culinary skills, coupled with bags of charm, obviously having been inspired by his famous dad.

‘Buddy is the hands down winner for me. Not only does he show first class presenting skills, but his knife work, knowledge of products and confidence in the kitchen shines though.

‘No doubt that any young chefs would excel if they had Jamie Oliver and Gennaro Contaldo as mentors in the kitchen, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him follow in his dad’s footsteps – or even overtake him!

RIVER

Earlier this month, Jamie delighted fans by sharing a clip of his 12-year-old son Buddy whipping together a homemade pasta dish – while his younger brother River also made an appearance.

Buddy created the meal alongside Italian chef Gennaro Contaldo – his mentor and collaborator – with a brief cameo from River, six, who wandered in to inspect the ingredients.

Proud dad Jamie wrote: ‘Buddy following in my footsteps learning from the pasta master himself!’ and fans went wild over the clip, with one writing: ‘We love you River!!’

Lisa commented: ‘Keeping it in the family, Buddy has been joined by his brother River and they have been making pasta.

‘It’s fair to say they have had a head start in the cooking department, but still, you can’t hide raw talent.

‘Pasta, like pizza, is a great choice as it uses easily available ingredients and is versatile. River is extremely cute and seems to be following in his dads footsteps.

‘I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they are judges on junior bake off in the not too distant future,’ she added.

In his latest family cooking video, Jamie shared an adorable video of his daughter Petal helping her brother Buddy to whip up some frozen yoghurt.

The proud father-of-five posted the clip on his Instagram account on Friday, with the one-minute video opening with the siblings standing in the kitchen of their Essex home and Jamie yelling at them to count down from three in the background.

After saying ‘hi guys’ in unison, Buddy explained: ‘Today we’re going to make the most delicious homemade ice cream in one minute.’

How to make Buddy and Petal’s fro-yo:

– Chop two ripe and bananas and top with lime juice (optional)

– Freeze them for half a day

– Pop the frozen bananas in a food processor until they become a paste

– Add three tablespoons of frozen yoghurt and turn the processor off when it’s mixed

– Scoop the mixture into ice cream cones and top with sprinkles, chocolate shavings and cinnamon

The easy-to-follow recipe only requires three tablespoons of plain yoghurt, two chopped bananas and some lime juice as an optional extra.

To begin with, the brother and sister – who have a two-year age difference – start by chopping their two ripe bananas into bitesize pieces.

Addressing other aspiring child home chefs, Buddy said: ‘Whenever you’re using a knife, make sure there’s always an adult [there to supervise].’

Once they had finished cutting up their fruit, Petal then looked around the family’s kitchen for a lime.

Before squeezing the juice over his banana, Buddy said: ‘The acid from the lime stops the banana going brown and also adds a lot more flavour.’

Demonstrating how to safely chop fruit at home, Buddy then showed viewers ‘the bridge’ method – which involves holding the lime steady with your thumb and index finger and cutting straight down.

After cutting the fruit into two perfect halves, Buddy struggled to get any juice out of it – prompting his big sister to take over.

Petal joked: ‘This is a challenging job!’ The teenager then grabbed a freezer bag and held it open for her little brother to pop the fruit in.

Buddy explained: ‘You’re going to pop these bananas into a bag and freeze them for about half a day.’ The siblings then said in unison: ‘Right, let’s make some ice cream!’

In the next clip, Buddy struggled to reopen the cold freezer bag.  As Petal giggled to herself, their dad Jamie joked off-camera: ‘I thought you said it was one-minute ice cream.’

Once he’d managed to open the bag, Buddy then poured the bananas into a food processor and whizzed them into a smooth paste.

‘It smells so good,’ Petal said, before running off-camera to grab a plastic spatula. Buddy and Petal then poured tablespoons of yoghurt into the processor and mixed it until the mixture had thickened.

Explaining what to do next, Buddy said: ‘We’re going to use the spoon we used for the yoghurt and get cone and fill it up with ice cream.’ Petal added: ‘Remember to do this quickly before it melts.’

The pair finished off by adding some chocolate sprinkles, chocolate shavings and a sprinkling of cinnamon.

The video ends with Petal and Buddy calling their younger sibling River, six, in from the garden to enjoy an ice cream.

‘Delicious,’ River and Buddy say as they tuck into their sweet treat, before Petal gives a quick ‘whoop!’
