‘It was just so not the person I wanted to be’: Florence Pugh reflects on rejecting a role in Hollywood that she was asked to lose weight for

Florence Pugh has reflected on being told to lose weight for a role early on in her career.

The Don’t Worry Darling actress, 27, landed a pilot for a show called Studio City that never went forward in the end but she claims producers asked her to change her body for the role.

She refused the role and decided she would not return to acting until she had a ‘better grasp of what she wanted to represent’.

When she returned to being an actress one of her next roles was playing a female wrestler opposite Dwayne Johnson in the WWE film Fighting With My Family.

Chatting to TIME as she appeared on their 2023 list of Next Generation Leaders as she looked back over her career, Florence spoke about the incident.

She explained: ‘The person I came back to was a female wrestler with muscles and big thighs who made her own name as a champion.

‘I quite liked that because the last time I’d been there I was told I needed to lose weight—it was just so not the person I wanted to be.’

She previously told The Telegraph about the incident: ‘All the things that they were trying to change about me – whether it was my weight, my look, the shape of my face, the shape of my eyebrows – that was so not what I wanted to do, or the industry I wanted to work in.

‘I’d thought the film business would be like [my experience of making] The Falling, but actually, this was what the top of the game looked like, and I felt I’d made a massive mistake.’

Studio City was not picked up by a network and she soon won a role in 2016’s Lady Macbeth, which skyrocketed her career.

Florence is currently filming rom com We Live in Time in London with Andrew Garfield.

The film’s plot has been closely guarded but is being described as a ‘funny, deeply moving and immersive love story’.

It was reported last month that Florence and Andrew were set to co-star in the new romantic film together.

The Don’t Worry Darling actress and Andrew – who presented together at the Oscars – were in negotiations on the project.

Florence recently confirmed on the Jimmy Fallon Show: ‘We are doing a movie together… don’t worry that’s not a lie. We are doing a movie together.

‘I met him the day before in rehearsals and we instantly got along and I was taking the p*ss out of him and he loved it and he was taking the p*ss out of me and I loved it. It was great!’

John Crowley will direct the film from a script by Nick Payne, according to Deadline.
