FULL-TIME: CHELSEA 3-1 SOUTHAMPTON

And that’s a wrap, as we play just a few minutes of added time and a dejected Southampton side merely just see out the defeat.

Another fine outing for Chalobah, who adds another goal to his collection and got the Blues off the mark. Both Lukaku and Werner were unlucky to see goals ruled offside, before the German slotted home to restore the lead after James Ward-Prowse slotted a penalty.

The Saints captain was later sent off for a reckless challenge on Jorginho, before Chelsea went on to see out the win with a cherry on the cake provided by Ben Chilwell.

GOAL CHELSEA! (CHILWELL)

Now the floodgates are open.

Both with the scoreline and literally, with the rain lashing down at Stamford Bridge.

Chilwell has made up for giving away the penalty earlier in the match, after slotting home what was essentially a goalmouth scramble.

It started with Lukaku, who hits the post with a header, before Azpilicueta then rattles the crossbar with the follow up.

Panic ensues and Chilwell is there to poke it over the line, despite the best efforts of McCarthy to keep it out.

Three points will be going to the home side here then.

16:45
GOAL CHELSEA (WERNER)

Now he’s got his goal!

There will be no VAR intervention here, and none other than forgotten man Barkley has played a key role!

A wonderful cross-field pass from the recently introduced sub is then cushion and rolled across the six-yard box by Azpilicueta, before Werner is there to tap home from close range and send the Bridge wild.

79′ Chelsea substitute

Loftus-Cheek off. Ross Barkley on… remember him?

Moments earlier Jorginho had replaced Kovacic, meaning Tuchel has now played his full hand.

16:35
70′

Alex McCarthy is an absolute shoo-in for Man of the Match, after pulling off another quite splendid save.

He denies Timo Werner yet again, who hammers a thunderous effort at goal from close range after being put through by Lukaku.

The German can only look to the the skies, as McCarthy is mobbed by his appreciative team-mates.

16:29
65′

Chilwell looking to make amends, and very nearly gets his side back ahead after being teed up by Mount.

The playmaker makes an immediate impact as he sweeps the ball across goal and Chilwell directs a shot marginally wide.

16:25
62′ – Substitute

Tuchel, still visibly livid, is shuffling the pack.

Mason Mount is introduced from the substitutes’ bench for Callum Hudson-Odoi.

16:21
58′ GOAL SOUTHAMPTON (WARD-PROWSE)

It’s Ward-Prowse who steps up and of course he’s never missing. He rifles it home and Hasenhuttl’s men are level.

16:19
SOUTHAMPTON PEN!

Well, well well, how about this! It’s the man of the moment Tino Livramento, who is brought down by Ben Chilwell. Can’t have any arguments about it.

16:12
49′

McCarthy involved pretty much immediately from the off as Hudson-Odoi dances through the back line with delicate feet, before slotting in Werner who shoots powerfully right at the ‘keeper.

16:06
SECOND HALF UNDER WAY

Both sets of players are back out at the Bridge and the whistle has sounded, we’re back at it!

15:54
Premier League half-time scores

Burnley 0-0 Norwich

Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Leeds 1-0 Watford

Wolves 1-1 Newcastle

Manchester United 1-1 Everton (full-time result)

HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON

Well then, quite an interesting end to that one.

Chelsea players and fans are still livid that the lead has not been doubled.

Local lad Trevoh Chalobah’s diving header is the difference, though both Romelu Lukaku and then Timo Werner have had efforts in the back of the net ruled out for offside.

Southampton have shown brief spells of promise, though remain searching for a foothold.

James Ward-Prowse the only player to really go close for the visitors. An interesting second half lies ahead.

15:49
VAR RULES IT OUT!

Pain for Werner, who will NOT be getting his goal.

All players get back to the centre circle ready to restart play when it’s announced that VAR are to check the goal for a foul in the build-up by Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Ref Martin Atkinson goes over to the monitor to have a look and decides that Azpilicueta has impeded youngster Kyle Walker-Peters and the goal is ruled out, to immediate protestations.

An irrate Thomas Tuchel is livid and gets booked for his complaints, as Stamford Bridge becomes a melting pot.

CHELSEA 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON

15:42
42′ GOAL! (WERNER)

Tuchel’s men two goals to the good! They’ll take a healthy lead into the interval and it’s a huge confidence booster for that man Timo Werner.

It’s a tidy little header from the German forward, after Hudson-Odoi put the chance on a plate by clipping a cross to the back post and Werner is there to head home.

Moments earlier Chelsea had already had the ball in the back of the net, after a Rudiger surge teed up Lukaku to effortlessly tap in… but the linesman’s flag said no.

CHELSEA 2-0 SOUTHAMPTON

15:37
34′

A scare for the hosts as a fizzing, dangerous cross is delivered into the area and Walcott manages to get his head on it.

Fortunately for Chelsea, he can’t get enough contact and his header glances wide, but the space in which he was afforded will be a point of concern for sure.

Moments earlier a phase of quick passing looked to poised to set up Lukaku… but for a decisive late block to break down the play.

26′

Biiig hands from McCarthy, who denies Chilwell the chance to double the lead.

The Chelsea full-back unlocked a pocket of space after a lovely one-two interchange with Kovacic, before driving a low effort at goal and looking to use the slick surface.

McCarthy uses his experience to get his body behind it and shunt the ball to safety.

15:26
23′

Quick-fire chances at both ends, as James Ward-Prowse goes close with a rasping effort for the visitors.

A low-drive from the Saints captain skids just shy of Mendy’s post, with the Chelsea keeper looking back at it with uncertainty… he probably wouldn’t have got to that, had it been on target.

Chelsea break moments later and Loftus-Cheek takes a punt after the ball pops up invitingly for the midfielder.

His volley is struck true, but sails narrowly wide of McCarthy’s post.

Tuchel’s men are pressing relentlessly and clearly looking to make amends from the recent City defeat.

Chelsea in full stride now, as a slick interchange of play feeds Lukaku through on goal, but Salisu gets back in time to deny him.

15:10
10′ GOAL CHELSEA! (Chalobah)

Solid start and exactly what Tuchel ordered.

Chelsea have made good use of their possession in the early stages and now their nose is in front.

Ben Chilwell’s corner is flicked on by the returning Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah is there at the back post to nod home from close range and add to his Blues account!

15:06

First Chelsea attack leads to a good chance for wide-man Werner who finds a pocket of space, but his low effort is saved well by McCarthy in the Saints goal.

FORM GUIDE

Chelsea suffered back-to-back defeats under Thomas Tuchel for just the second time since the German took over in January having been beaten by Man City in the league a week ago and Juventus in the Champions League in midweek.

It’s hardly confidence-inspiring, though Southampton arriving into this fixture lacking a strong streak of momentum.

The Saints lost their recent Premier League clash with Wolves, while prior to that they needed a penalty shootout to defeat Sheffield United in the League Cup.

14:32
HUGE result at Old Trafford

… for Everton.

Benitez’s Toffees grab a well-earned point, and very nearly won the match in the dying moments… only for Yerri Mina’s tap in to be ruled offside.

Cristiano Ronaldo storms down the tunnel alone at full-time, clearly fuming that he did not start the match. Pressure now mounting on Solskjaer…
