Date:

Girls Aloud have joked that Nicola Roberts is going to look after their kids when they’re tired and on tour next year.

Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Nicola and Kimberley Walsh – are planning to hit the road in May and June 2024 and the announcement was made on Wednesday night.

Speaking on Zoe Ball’s Radio Two show on Thursday morning, the foursome discussed their reunion and made the quip about Nicola – the only member of the band without kids.

Cheryl explained: ‘Nicola said we need a family bus. Nicola can stay on another bus and we can just feed the kids to her when we get tired!’

Laughing Nicola then added: ‘We’ll be half way down the motorway and they’ll be in the child-free family bus and I’ll be with all the kids!’

Cheryl, 40, shares son Bear, six, with ex Liam Payne, while Kimberley, 42, is mum to three sons Bobby, eight, Cole, six and Nate, 18 months with husband Justin Scott.

Meanwhile Nadine, 38, shares daughter Anaíya, nine, with her ex-fiancé Jason Bell.

Elsewhere in the interview the band confessed even their family and friends did not know about their reunion plans – and they have been avoiding people for the past week.

The foursome discussed their reunion and confessed the loyalty of their fans is what drew them back to the stage 22 years after forming.

When asked by Zoe how long they have been keeping the news a secret, Nicola said: ‘Months and months, we didn’t tell our family and friends, our families didn’t know.’

Nadine then confessed: ‘When we put out the teaser, we’ve been ignoring people all week’, while birthday girl Kimberley admitted: ‘We’ve been ignoring people on the school run’, while the rest of the girls giggled.

The girls admitted listening to a montage of their music made them ’emotional’ and ‘excited’ while they spoke to the radio veteran.

Zoe asked the ladies how the decision to reunite came about, to which they said: ‘It’s a crazy experience, we’ve had so many amazing songs and times together then the conversation came up and we feel so passionate about it…

‘Then a few weeks ago we were shooting the tour commercial and it felt very 2002 Sound Of The Underground era’.

Kimberley interjected: ‘The last few years we’ve found a massive outpouring of love and its been tough but something pulled us in’, while Cheryl added: ‘Between us we felt something – a shift – it feels magical, let’s go!…

‘We’re so fortunate to have our fans and the loyalties. It’s 21 years later. It’s crazy’.

On kicking off their rehearsals, Kimberley said: ‘We’ll start rehearsals in April, which is a month’, yet Nicola said: ”I think we need more than a month!’ Cheryl countered: ‘It’s muscle memory… we’ve done it a thousand times’.

Zoe asked what they had planned for the tour – which the girls admitted had started to get ‘out of control’. Nadine said: ‘We’re known for going over the top – flying under the stage, running through the arena…

‘We’re gluttons for punishment but we’re all about the entertainment.’

When asked about her son Bear, who she shares with ex Liam Payne, Cheryl said: ‘Bear is delicious and not a baby anymore. We blinked and we’re here almost seven!’

Zoe queried if their kids knew about the tour, Cheryl said: ‘I couldn’t tell bear because the whole school would know within half an hour…

‘The BBC played [our show] Tangled Up and we were chatting on our group chat and Bear was lying next to me and looking at my phone and earwigging…

‘He said: ‘Mummy may I ask. Why all the nakedness?’ Then he was cringing. he was curious why Kimberley was there. It was very humbling… He’ll come to the show. I don’t think I’ll get away with [him not coming]’.

Nicola hilariously confessed when she goes to shops, staff blast Girls Aloud – leaving her red-faced: ‘If you’re in a shop and they put your songs on and I think I’m going to put this lipstick down and back out of the shop’.

Zoe then Facetimed Rylan Clark: ‘He said he’d kill me if I didn’t’, before the star answered while preparing to film This Morning alongside Alison Hammond.

He said: ‘Girls I wanna say two things to you. I don’t normally speak on behalf of other people, but on behalf of the gays, thank you. Then – I want justice for [your song] Untouchable so let’s get it in the top 10.’

Speaking about rumours they are performing at Glastonbury, Cheryl said: ‘Can I be blunt. Glastonbury haven’t even asked us. I’m sure the Glastonbury lot are asking who asked Girls Aloud?’, while Kimberley added: ‘We’re waiting to be asked!’

Cheryl revealed they had been discussing the plans for some time but put the idea on ice when Sarah – who died in September 2021 – was diagnosed with cancer.

She said in a statement: ‘We all started talking about the possibility of doing something to celebrate Girls Aloud’s 20-year anniversary a few years ago. The anniversary seemed like an obvious thing that we would celebrate.

‘But when Sarah fell ill all priorities changed. She passed away a year before the anniversary and it just didn’t feel right, it felt too soon.’

The group plan to use the tour to ‘celebrate’ their late friend.

Cheryl added: ‘But now, I think there is an energy that does makes it feel right. It’s the right time to celebrate Sarah, it’s the right time to celebrate the band and the right time to celebrate the fact we can still do this 21 years later. That’s a big honour in lots of ways.’

Kimberley said: ‘Over the last year, we’ve felt this outpouring of love – obviously towards Sarah, but actually towards all of us as a group…

‘And I guess it’s ignited something in all of us again. It feels like something has changed and it does feel like the right time to celebrate Sarah and the 20-year anniversary that we didn’t celebrate at the time.’

The group hope fans will enjoy the tour just as much as them.

Nadine said: ‘Girls Aloud are a band that made such a huge impact on people’s lives. We grew up with the band, but so did so many other people.

‘So for us not to do something again feels like such a shame and a waste. We want to have that moment with fans where we can all enjoy it together.’
