A resurfaced interview has revealed that Birmingham City boss Tony Mowbray previously claimed he ‘would stop’ football management if he ‘had an issue at home’.

News broke on Monday morning that the Birmingham boss would be stepping away from his position at St. Andrew’s to receive medical treatment for six to eight weeks after just eight games in charge.

It is unclear what illness Mowbray has been diagnosed with but the club confirmed he would be stepping aside on Monday.

The news is reported to have left his new side ‘stunned’, having only recently arrived in place of Wayne Rooney on January 8, after the former England international was dismissed following a poor run of form.

Now, in the wake of the news, an interview with The Athletic has resurfaced in which Mowbray reflected on the issues that could tear him away from football.

Speaking in 2019, he said: ‘As a manager, this job is not three hours a day. I am here at 7.15am and leave after 10pm. If I had an issue at home, I would stop. I would go to the owner and say, ‘My children or wife are in trouble here.’

‘I am conscious that my kids are growing up without their dad at home. My family house is two hours away. I don’t go home every night. I have an apartment here.

‘When the kids are unruly, out of order, not going to bed or not doing their homework, starting to use bad language, I think, ‘Have I got it right? Should I be at home? Should I just be a dad? Is this job worth it?’ There is reward, but the balance is important.

‘My wife [Amber] is putting a brave stance on, in front of three boys testing her every day. I can feel her getting weary. There are days I go home just to make sure they do their homework, get up, go to bed on time. If I do it twice a week, it is big for us.’

Mowbray is currently married to second-wife Amber, with whom he has three children.

In 1995, Mowbray’s first-wife, Bernadette Doyle Mowbray, died of breast cancer on New Year’s Day.

In that same interview, he revealed: ‘For the first however many years, wherever I played on New Year’s Day, I would get to Glasgow on a plane to mark the anniversary of her death.

‘I remember one year I got there two minutes to midnight in a taxi from the airport. I don’t do that now. I have to respect my second wife (Amber), our children and our life together’.

According to The Herald, Bernadette was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1994, which caused the couple to bring their wedding forward, once they learned the extent of her illness.

On Monday morning, a club statement read: ‘Birmingham City can confirm that Manager, Tony Mowbray, requires medical treatment which means he will be temporarily stepping away from the on-site management of the Club for a period of approximately six to eight weeks.

‘Assistant manager, Mark Venus, will assume temporary responsibility for the team with immediate effect.’

Mowbray said the club had been ‘incredibly supportive’ of him as he confirmed the news – and said he would continue to provide his guidance to the coaching staff.

‘Following my recent LMA Health Assessment I have received a medical diagnosis that will require me to receive treatment. Undergoing treatment will necessitate that I temporarily step away from the Technical Area as Manager of Birmingham City Football Club.

‘Until I return, my assistant manager, Mark Venus, will take temporary charge of the team, supported by coaches Ashley Cole, Pete Shuttleworth and Maik Taylor. I will continue to provide advice and counsel while undergoing treatment.

‘The Club has been incredibly supportive of me and my family and we are very grateful. I know that everyone will be respectful of our privacy at this time.’
