Shopper’s throwback supermarket find in the middle of an IGA: ‘I never thought I’d see one of these again’

A shopper has expressed surprise at finding an old coffee grinder inside a supermarket, which customers can use to grind beans in their preferred style.

The gadgets were once a regular fixture in supermarket coffee aisles all over Australia but are now a rare sight. 

Customers would pick up a bag of whole beans, choose their grind setting – from course to fine – and put the freshly-ground coffee back in the bag and take it to the checkout. 

The customer shared the nostalgic find inside an IGA store to the Old Shops Australia Facebook page, evoking memories for many members.

‘Well I’ll be darned. I never thought I’d see one again,’ one woman said. 

‘Oh I remember this, I must be getting old,’ another wrote.

‘Wow I haven’t seen one of those grinders in years! I used to work for a major coffee company and it was my understanding that they were all removed after an unfortunate incident involving fingers!’ a third added. 

Some said they fondly remember the rich just-ground smell that would fill the aisles when someone used the machine.

‘I can smell that from here. Mmm,’ one member replied.  

Another shopper said they too had a ‘nostalgia overload’ when finding an old grinder at their local supermarket.

‘Who remembers the old coffee grinders that used to be in supermarkets and other grocery stores where you’d bag your own coffee?’ they asked in a tweet.  

‘Some ratbags would grind the expensive beans into the cheap bag, back in the day when such things operated on a trust basis,’ one man remembered.

‘When I was a little boy I used to stand near it just to revel in the beautiful aroma,’ a second replied. 

‘The smell in that aisle was unforgettable,’ a third added.
