Sebastien Haller scored his first goal since his cancer diagnosis on World Cancer Day as Borussia Dortmund beat Freiburg 5-1.

The Bundesliga match was played on Saturday February 2, which is globally recognised as World Cancer Day.

Haller was diagnosed with testicular cancer, but after treatment, has made his way back to Dortmund’s first-team, making his competitive return last month in a 4-3 win over Augsburg.

In the 51st minute, the striker from the Ivory Coast got his goal against ten-man Freiburg. He dispatched home Raphael Guerreiro’s cross to head home for Dortmund, who extended their lead to a two-goal cushion for the first time that afternoon.

The club also marked the occasion of World Cancer Day by including a lump on the centre circle before the match, and at half time, to raise awareness of testicular cancer.

Borussia Dortmund beat Freiburg 5-1 in the end, despite the scores being level at 1-1 when the half-time whistle blew.

French defender Kiliann Sildillia was sent off for the visitors in the 17th minute, before Nico Schlotterbeck put Dortmund ahead nine minutes later.

Lucas Holer scored Freiburg’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time to take the sides in equal after the opening 45 minutes, but the yellow and black showed their dominance in the second half.

Karim Adeyemi put the hosts back ahead three minutes after the restart, before Haller’s header a few minutes later. Just after the hour mark, Haller was substituted from the pitch, replaced by 18-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko.

The comprehensive nature of the result was sealed through later goals from Julian Brandt and Giovanni Reyna.

The win saw Dortmund move to 37 points, giving them a three point cushion over Freiburg, who currently sit in sixth place in the Bundesliga.

Haller was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July, and required surgeries and therapy to overcome the medical issue.

On his return to the playing field following the cancer diagnosis, he had special boots created with a slogan expressing his anger at the disease.
