Even the nicest of towels can eventually end up feeling rough and a bit uncomfortable to use.

The main reason towels are no longer as absorbent as they used to be and why they feel more like cardboard than fluffy towels is due to the amount of washing detergent being used on them.

Washing detergent can build up in the fibres of the towel and will gradually make them less fluffy and rougher.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one cleaning enthusiast was unsure of how to get his “cardboard” feeling towels back to their original soft self.

Nish Ranayke wrote: “How do I get my towels nice and soft again? I’ve used softener but they’re getting to the cardboard stage.”

To reverse this issue it is often suggested to use white vinegar however, the majority go group members were more in favour of using soda crystals.

Kathleen Huron said: “You need to use soda crystals in your washing machine. It eliminates all the soap buildup.”

Cassie Bielick urged: “Don’t use fabric softener as it builds up and towels go hard. Wash them with just soda crystals might take a couple of goes to remove the softener, but it brings them back to what they should be like.”

Julie Cordelia commented: “As the above comment mentioned, soda crystals added to the wash are fantastic.”

Emily Nolan wrote: “Someone commended a little white vinegar in the fabric drawer, but I think soda crystals in the drum works better than white vinegar.

“I put some in at my last washing cycle and my towels are no longer crunchy, rough and hard. Works like magic.”

Halema Pink said: “Half a bag of soda crystals in the washing machine and tumble when the towels are nearly dry.”

Julie Kay wrote: “Yep soda crystals in the wash, don’t use fabric condition either as stops absorbency.”

Sarah Elliot commented: “As well as using soda crystals, shake the towels to loosen the fibres before they are washed and then again after they come out of the wash.”

Soda crystals have the power to turn tough old towels back into smooth and fluffy towels.

To do this households can either soak their towels in soda crystals and water for 10 to 15 minutes or add soda crystals straight to their washing machine on their usual cycle.

Soda crystals can be picked up from Wilko for £1.50 or at Sainsbury’s and Tesco for £2. As only half the bag is needed, this will work out as 75p.

Nish later took to the comments section and said: “Thanks everyone for the tips. I’ve tried soda crystals and they work like magic. The towels are super soft now.”
