How to soften towels without using a tumble dryer: Natural solution only costs 99p

One of the best ways to soften old, hard towels is to pop them in the tumble dryer for a few hours.

However, with energy bills still high, many Britons won’t be using their tumble dryer to save money.

With this in mind, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their effective solution for softening hard towels without using a tumble dryer.

The cleaning influencer has more than 4.7 million followers on Instagram and often shares her handy hacks online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own tips for solving particular household problems.

On one Facebook group, social media user Heather Bootland asked: “Tips for soft towels without tumble drying please?”

The post was inundated with comments from fellow Mrs Hinch fans. The most suggested comment was to use white vinegar.

Susan Chambers said: “Use vinegar in your conditioner drawer instead of conditioner.” Nikki Savage agreed and wrote: “Use vinegar instead of softener.”

Linda Hughes posted: “Use white distilled vinegar for all your washes for whiter whites, soft towels [and] bright colours. A capful in the drawer.”

Rita Trimmell suggested: “Use half the amount of detergent, sub one cup of white vinegar for fabric softener. Don’t overload the machine and double rinse.”

White vinegar is a natural cleaning ingredient that can be found in most households. The natural cleaning solution can also be bought online or from most supermarkets.

Stardrops White Vinegar Multi-Purpose Cleaning Spray costs 99p from Asda and Dri-Pak Pure White Vinegar costs £2 from Ocado.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using soda crystals, baking soda, washing pods, drying them outside and not using fabric softener.

Lesley Hickford said: “Wash them in soda crystals.” Alison Vaughan commented: “Sprinkle baking soda.”

Michelle Hughes commented: “Try using washing pods. Ariel smells beautiful and towels are fluffy and soft.”

Jackie Brearley replied: “No need to tumble dry or use a conditioner which clogs up the m/c and sewers. Give towels a really good shake before putting them on the line.”
