Fans of Ryan Reynolds, time travel, and 13 Going on 30 will enjoy this film. Is it satisfactory? : It only goes to show that there is such a thing as having too much Ryan Reynolds.
Ryan Reynolds plays Adam, a time-traveling pilot who crashes in the year 2022 and partners up with his 12-year-old counterpart (Walker Scobell) to save the world. The film itself isn’t really good, although it does have a 13-minute running time. Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner play Young Adam’s parents in the Going on 30 reunion. (Last week’s ranking: 1)
2. Shrek
For fans of: Smash Mouth’s song “All Star” | Is it good? : Memes want you to believe it’s the greatest film ever made.
It is, after all, Shrek. I’m not going to tell you what it is since you already know. Mike Myers voices a green ogre who appears to be mean but is actually friendly. It contains many adult jokes, but children enjoy it. In 2020, it was inducted into the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress, winning the first Best Animated Film Oscar. It’s important “culturally, historically, or aesthetically.” (Last week’s ranking: 2)
3. The sequel to Shrek
Ogres, donkeys, magic, “I Need a Hero” | Is it any good? : It’s the sequel to The Godfather: Part II for youngsters.
Shrek 2 competed for the Palme d’Or in Cannes, did you know? Yes, it did, since Shrek 2 continues the long trend of sequels that are superior to the original. Fiona (Cameron Diaz) brings Shrek (Mike Myers) home to see her parents in this film, but they disapprove when they realise she married an ogre. The film then moves on to dealing with magical curses, transformation potions, and a particularly evil Fairy Godmother. It’s all downhill from here for the Shrek franchise, but this one is so amazing that it doesn’t matter. (Last day’s ranking: 3)

4. Dunkirk
Fans of: World War II films, Christopher Nolan’s singular cultural role | Is it good? : Very
Christoper Nolan, the only director allowed to make $100 million theatrically released blockbusters based on his own original ideas, wrote and directed this epic war film in 2017. He is able to do so because he creates films like Dunkirk, which is a thrillingly immersive, architecturally inventive, and emotionally powerful film about the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, a watershed moment in the British war effort. 5. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Homecoming
Is it good? : For lovers of: Madea, Beyoncé allusions | Is it good? : It’s complete nonsense, but you have to admire Perry’s dedication.
The MCU currently has 12 instalments as of this film. Oh, no, I didn’t mean the Marvel Cinematic Universe; I was referring to Tyler Perry’s main character, Madea. Madea gathers her family to celebrate her great-college grandson’s graduation in Homecoming, but secrets emerge that threaten to derail the celebration. Perry said he’d retire Madea in 2019 after A Madea Family Funeral, and we’ve seen how well that stuck, so I don’t think this is the last we’ll see of her. (Last day’s ranking: 5)
6. Shooter
Fans of Marine snipers and Mark Wahlberg will enjoy this film. Is it satisfactory? : It completes the task with a boom.
Mark Wahlberg plays elite sniper Bob Lee Swagger, who is wrongfully accused of an assassination and goes on the run to find the perpetrators and redeem his name. Is he about to unearth a massive conspiracy that reaches all the way to the top? You’re aware of it! (Last day’s ranking: 4)
7. Despicable Me 2
Fans of: Those obnoxious little Minions | Is it any good? : Minion memes are extremely popular among children and adults who share them on Facebook.
The first Despicable Me film was about a villain growing to love his three adopted daughters, and the sequel is about him attempting to give up his life as a villain so that he may spend all of his time to them. Cute! The Minions and the Pharrell Williams song “Happy” are both unavoidable 2013 phenomenas in this film. (Last week’s ranking: 7)

If it were made today, this heist drama based on a true storey would be a Hulu limited series. But it wasn’t made today; it was released in 2008, before we understood how horrible Kevin Spacey was as a person. If you can stand it any longer, he portrays an MIT professor who leads a group of clever students who count cards at Las Vegas casinos for a living – which is strictly forbidden! Although the premise is intriguing, the film focuses on the least interesting aspects of the storey. (Last week’s ranking: 10)
9. Coach Carter
Fans of inspirational sports dramas and Samuel L. Jackson in leading roles will enjoy this film. Is it satisfactory? : It’s formulaic, but it’s effective.
Samuel L. Jackson plays a basketball coach at a low-income high school who requires his athletically brilliant but at-risk players to sign contracts stating that they must maintain good grades or be kicked off the team. It’s a heartwarming tale of harsh love based on a genuine storey. (Last day’s ranking: 8)
10. The Bombardment
Fans of World War II films | Is it any good? : It’s a powerful piece that pays homage to the past.
This Danish drama depicts the devastating bombing of occupied Copenhagen in 1945, when the British air force destroyed the city, killing many innocent citizens, including children. It’s difficult not to think of Ukraine while watching this film right now. (Today’s position: 9)
