In New Addington, a 17-year-old boy known to the victim was arrested shortly afterwards and police have been given an extra 24 hours to question him.

“Our hearts are broken” by Elianne’s senseless death, her family said.

Several relatives visited the scene of the attack on Thursday evening, gathering near a bus stop inside the police cordon.

As flowers were placed on the ground, members of the group embraced.

Their earlier statement stated: “Elianne was the light of our lives. She was bright and funny, and she had many friends who adored her.

With her whole life ahead of her, she had hopes and dreams for the future.

We have all fallen apart. Our lives, along with the lives of our wider family, have been shattered.”

On Wednesday, at about 08:30 BST, police, paramedics and an air ambulance were called to Wellesley Road near the Whitgift Centre, but Elianne died shortly after.

After getting off a double decker bus with friends, the year 11 student at Old Palace of John Whitgift school in Croydon was attacked. Witnesses say the bus driver and other passersby tried to help her.

Rishi Sunak said it was “absolutely shocking” that a girl not much older than his own children would be cruelly murdered.

“Everyone will be shocked as I am, appalled by what has happened, and quite frankly angry,” he told BBC London’s political editor Tim Donovan.

“It shows how important it is to crack down on knife crime.”

On Thursday, a post-mortem examination will be conducted.

“Our hearts are broken. We are so sorry for your loss and are here as part of your community to support you. LFB.” reads a note left at the scene.

In tears, teenage girls approached the crime scene holding flowers and hugged each other as they left.

Police Det Ch Insp Rebecca Woodsford said: “My thoughts and those of my team are with Elianne’s family at this time of great pain. We will do everything in our power to support them.”.

We have recovered CCTV from the area and interviewed a number of witnesses. Forensic scientists have also examined the scene as part of our investigation.”

Meet Eliyanna Andam’s Parents

Eliyanna Andam’s parents are named Joyce Andam and Michael Andam. They are both from Ghana and moved to the UK in the early 2000s. They have two other children, a son and a daughter.

Joyce Andam is a nurse and Michael Andam is a businessman. They are both said to be devastated by the loss of their daughter.

In a statement, they said: “Eliyanna was a loving and caring daughter and sister. She was a bright and talented young woman with a bright future ahead of her. We are heartbroken by her loss.”

The police have not released any information about the suspect or motive for the murder. They are continuing to investigate the case and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

A vigil was held in Eliyanna’s memory on 23 September 2023. Hundreds of people gathered in Croydon to pay their respects to the young girl.

A fundraising page has also been set up to raise money for Eliyanna’s family. The page has already raised over £10,000.
