The incident began when officers from the Directorate of Special Units (DSU) launched a house raid as part of an investigation into drug, weapons, and vehicle trafficking.

The suspect, who was not named, opened fire from behind a closed door as officers entered the residence, wounding the three officers. The officers at the scene retreated to attend to the injured and called in reinforcements. The suspect, who had barricaded himself in the house, was injured and taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The 36-year-old officer who was killed was in his 30s, and the other two officers, who were seriously wounded and sustained minor injuries, were also in their 30s. The incident took place in the suburb of Lodelinsart, Charleroi, and was attended by a forensics team. Pictures showed police in place around the area, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

Tributes poured in for the officers affected, with the interior minister, Annelies Verlinden, expressing her condolences and stating that the incident was a black day for the police. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo also expressed his thoughts and condolences, emphasizing the importance of the work of law enforcers and condemning the act of making them a target.
