Palace had been beaten 9-0 by Liverpool in the league, so when we got revenge in the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park I threw my shirt into the crowd out of sheer excitement and celebration.

I regretted it almost immediately and years later a fan got in touch to say they had it and showed me a picture of it. I offered to buy it off him as it meant so much to me — but he wouldn’t sell!

It was the most memorable win of my career, and a 4-3 thriller at that. I drove back to London afterwards with friends including the Tottenham player Mitchell Thomas.

I was hanging out the passenger window all the way home, singing and fist-pumping towards the Palace fans on the motorway. I’d never known footballing joy like it.
