Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is interested in funding a move to bring Cristiano Ronaldo in from Manchester United.

There is renewed doubt over Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford after he was axed from the squad by manager Erik ten Hag for his latest strop on the sidelines.

The 37-year-old was left frustrated at being left on the bench during United’s brilliant 2-0 win over Tottenham last week, and stormed down the tunnel before the game had even finished and reportedly left the stadium without seeing his victorious teammates.

Ten Hag swiftly acted, making the superstar train away from the main squad and axing him from the gameday squad against Chelsea on Saturday – as they drew 1-1 in the Premier League.

The Dutch boss insisted Ronaldo must ‘face the consequences’ for his ‘bad behaviour’ but then said he expects the forward to remain at the club for the rest of the season.

But that has not stopped the rumour mills from spinning, with Chelsea again linked with an interest.

The Daily Mail claim the Blues’ American owner Boehly has struck up a solid relationship with Ronaldo’s representative, Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes, and hopes it will help sign him when the transfer window reopens.

Boehly was keen on signing Ronaldo in the summer when Man United were listening to offers for the 37-year-old, but faced opposition from manager Thomas Tuchel, who has since lost his job.

It is apparently unclear whether new boss Graham Potter would be open to bringing in the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

And while Ten Hag’s recent comments distanced United from selling Ronaldo in January, former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell can see it happening.

He told the talkSPORT Breakfast: “Ronaldo wants to play Champions League football, but at Manchester United he isn’t there.

“If you look at the Premier League and the four teams in the Champions League right now, there is one, there is only one club.

“We know who it is not going to be. It’s not going to be Tottenham, it’s not going to be Liverpool, and it isn’t going to be Man City – it’s Chelsea, it’s only going to be Chelsea.

“They were interested in the summer, Todd Boehly is there, a new manager is in, and if you’re the manager at Chelsea, you’ve got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang there, you’ve never really handled the big players and you’re proving that you can get them playing, and the opportunity to get Cristiano Ronaldo comes up.

“That might be something that would appeal to him [Graham Potter].”

Campbell also added that United boss Ten Hag must take some responsibility for his falling out with Ronaldo, insisting the manager should have set out his plans for the icon when he first arrived to avoid a bust-up.

“The first person you go and see is Cristiano Ronaldo, because you know that is the potential dynamite at the club,”  said.

“As soon as you know you’re going to be the manager, you go and see him face-to-face and set out your plan with him from the start – ‘This is what I want to do, I need you with me. You’re not going to play every week, but you will get your game time’.

“And if he’s with you, great, but if not and he has to leave the club, you have to work something out where when he does it amicably.

“Ronaldo is a good teammate. You never hear of him being a bad teammate, so I think he would have gone it and held his hand up.

“This might be a frustrating month for him before the World Cup, but I don’t think Manchester United can afford for him not being involved.”
